SURREY RAISING MONEY FOR THE PCA BENEVOLENT FUND AND THE TOM MAYNARD TRUST

SURREY RAISING MONEY FOR THE PCA BENEVOLENT FUND AND THE TOM MAYNARD TRUST Surrey will be raising money for the Professional Cricketers’ Association Professional Cricketers’ Trust and the Tom Maynard Trust during their NatWest T20 Blast match against Sussex Sharks at the Kia Oval on Friday July 24. Surrey captain Gareth Batty, pace bowler Stuart Meaker, Second XI coach Ali Brown, chairman Richard Thompson and chief executive Richard Gould will be among the riders who will cycle 400 miles from Truro in Cornwall to the Kia Oval over five days between October 9 to 13 in Big Bike Ride 2 to raise funds for the two cricket charities. All of the riders are seeking sponsorship and the Surrey have allowed their contingent to have a bucket collection at their final home T20 match of the season to help towards the target of raising a six-figure sum from Big Bike Ride 2. Surrey players Chris Tremlett, Matt Dunn and Bradley Erasmus as well as members of the county’s academy squad will be helping out with the bucket collection at the Sussex match. The PCA Professional Cricketers’ Trust is part of the Association’s commitment to helping current and former players and their dependants in times of hardship and upheaval to readjust to the world beyond the game. The Fund also supports players and their dependants who might be in need of a helping hand with medical advice, a much-needed operation or those who require specialist advice, care or assistance. The Tom Maynard Trust was set up in the summer of 2012 following the tragic death of Tom, the Surrey and former Glamorgan batsman. Its initial objectives were to try to provide low level financial support for young cricketers making their way in the game. This has now been expanded to include grants for aspiring young sports people looking for support with different aspects of their career development, education and awareness programmes, the Tom Maynard Academy at the Desert Springs complex in Southern Spain where up to 14 emerging county cricketers will benefit from specialist technical and conditioning work, and a scholarship at his old school, Millfield School.
