Steven Finn-ishes with a Flourish to Win Top Award – 27/03/13 Middlesex paceman pips skipper to FTI MVP Title Steven Finn has held off stiff competition from his England teammates to scoop the FTI Most Valuable Player Award for the Winter of 2012/13. The Middlesex bowler came with a late charge in the final Test in Auckland to take the honours by just six points from his captain, Alastair Cook. Finn, 23, began the Winter by removing big-hitter Mohammad Shahzad in a T20 demolition of Afghanistan, before going on to perform consistently in all three formats of the game. In total, he took 11 wickets at 6.66 in T20 Internationals, 12 wickets at 4.40 in One Day Internationals, and 14 wickets at 3.47 in Test matches against India and New Zealand. He also proved he is no mug with the bat – with a maiden first-class half-century as a nightwatchman against the latter in a rearguard action that saved the first Test in Dunedin. But it was his career record-equaling six wickets for 125 runs in the first innings against the Kiwis in Auckland, including opening pair Peter Fulton and Hamish Rutherford, that saw him hit the front in the rankings. His side being unable to follow their Test series win in India against New Zealand, proved to be disappointing for the tall strike bowler. However, the team spirit shown to rescue a draw against the Kiwis which proved to be a heartening conclusion. Finn commented, ” The Winter programme has not finished exactly as we’d have hoped, but we’re delighted to have saved the final Test and the series against New Zealand. ” It was a tremendous team effort to avoid defeat. We now have a great opportunity to build on that and exact our revenge against the same opposition very soon. ” Personally, I’ve been pleased with my own form and delighted to have made a mark with both the ball and the bat. To come out on top of the FTI MVP is a real achievement. ” I’m hopeful I can use it as a springboard to bowl even better in what is going to be a massive summer for me and the team.” PCA Assistant Chief Executive, Jason Ratcliffe, said, ” The FTI MVP mine down into the data to discover key cricketing performance indicators and use proper analysis to show which players are really making a difference. “In Steven’s case it is no mean feat to come up trumps against Alastair, who is one of the world’s best batsmen. ” He has done very well this winter across all three formats of the game and, importantly, has stayed fit to play in more matches than anyone else.” John Waples, UK Head of Strategic Communications, FTI Consulting, said, ” The two tours have been challenging for the team this Winter. However, after a steady start in India the team performed magnificently in the Test series to win on Indian soil for the first time in 27 years. ” Steven Finn has been their best performer, taking wickets consistently in all three formats of the game and also scoring his maiden first-class half-century. ” We’re pleased that he’s won the FTI MVP. It bodes well for back-to-back Ashes series that a young fast bowler like himself is at the peak of his powers.” The FTI MVP Rankings reward players for every run scored, every wicket taken and every catch held. There are also bonus points awarded to those whose runs and wickets contribute to a win for the team, with captains earning points for their command of the side. Bowlers receive higher marks for, among other things, good economy rates, bowling maidens and for dismissing batsmen higher up the order. They can also win bonus points for five or more dismissals in an innings. In addition, batting points are handed out for high run rates and the percentage of the team’s runs each batsman contributes. Fielding points are awarded for catches, run outs and stumpings. Ends OVERALL ENGLAND FTI MVP POINTS WINTER 2012/13 PLAYER BATTING BOWLING FIELD CAPT.
