Cook makes his mark in England PCA MVP Rankings Alastair Cook’s double century in the day/night Test against the West Indies at Edgbaston has taken him into the top five of England’s Professional Cricketers’ Association Most Valuable Player Test Match Rankings. Cook earned 44 batting points for his 243, which came from 407 balls and made up 47 per cent of England’s total of 514 for eight declared. His innings laid the foundations for a crushing innings and 209 runs win and took Cook to 101 PCA MVP points for the season. Cook has now moved into fifth place in the Test rankings, 55 points behind the leader, Moeen Ali, and to seventh in the overall rankings, a point behind Eoin Morgan, England’s white ball captain. Joe Root, England’s new Test captain, heads the overall England rankings with 251 points across all formats with his 236 from 189 balls at Edgbaston earning him 22 batting points towards a match haul of 25 points. Ali, who took three wickets in the Edgbaston Test, became the second England player to reach the 200 points milestone for the season in all formats with his 12 points against the West Indies taking him to 201. All-rounder Ben Stokes is third in the overall table on 194 points and batsman/wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow fourth on 149 points. The PCA MVP Rankings system identifies the match-winners and key influencers of matches throughout the domestic season. The formula takes into account conditions, quality of opposition, captaincy and strike-rates as well as runs scored and wickets taken. Cook’s match haul of 47 points at Edgbaston, took him past 2,500 career PCA MVP points for England. Only Stuart Broad (3,340) and Jimmy Anderson (3,112) have earned more points since the PCA MVP system was introduced in 2007. Cook needs only 17 more rankings points in the remaining two Tests against the West Indies to become the third player to reach the 2,000 points landmark in Test cricket. Anderson heads the all-time Test table with 2,278 with Broad, who became England’s second leading wicket-taker of all-time at Edgbaston, second on 2,175 points. Anderson is second in this season’s Test PCA MVP on 125 points, a place and a point ahead of Root with Stokes in fourth place on 109 points.
