Bicknell Wins Frizzell Award For May – 04/06/2004 Martin Bicknell’s five wickets for Surrey against Kent last month not only helped his side to their first Frizzell County Championship win of the season, it tipped him over the milestone of 1,000 first class wickets and clinched May’s Frizzell PCA Performance of the Month award. A Thousand Wickets! It was the wicket of Kent’s Matthew Dennington, caught behind by Surrey captain Jonathan Batty, which gave Bicknell the 1000th wicket of his career – and Batty’s eight wickets with the gloves in the game almost saw him pip Bicknell to the award. Bell Second However, the Professional Cricketer’s Association’s 18 County representatives voted Bicknell into first place in May, with Warwickshire’s Ian Bell second thanks to his career-best 262 not out against Frizzell County Champions Sussex. In the end, Batty came in fourth with Gareth Breese of Durham coming third in the vote with his 165 not out helping his county reach their victory target of 451 runs against Somerset, the fourth highest in championship history. Outstanding Performances Exceptional displays throughout the season will be rewarded thanks to the initiative from Championship sponsors Frizzell and the Professional Cricketers’ Association. Each month, a number of outstanding performances will be nominated by a panel including Chairman of Selectors David Graveney and the PCA’s Gladstone Small, with all 18 County PCA representatives having the final vote on the monthly winner. Monthly winners will receive a cheque for £ 750 from Frizzell with the Performance of the Year rewarded with a cheque for £ 1000.
