WORCS BATSMAN GIDMAN FORCED TO RETIRE THROUGH INJURY Worcestershire and former Gloucestershire batsman Alex Gidman has been forced to retire from cricket due to Injury. Gidman suffered a freak injury to his left index finger during a pre-match fielding practice at Durham towards the end of the 2015 season. The initial recovery from the injury did not go as expected and Gidman later required a joint replacement as a last resort to try and regain a level of fitness that would enable him to play at the standard required. But unfortunately this did not happen and, after consultation with renowned specialist and surgeon Mike Hayton, it became clear that Gidman would be unable to no longer play cricket. Worcestershire Director of Cricket Steve Rhodes said ” On behalf of all the players and coaches, we are extremely disappointed for Alex. “He picked up a freak injury which has left him with problems that has ended his career. It’s a very sad day for Alex. “We wish him all the best for his future now” Gidman said ” It is with great sadness that I have no choice but to retire from the sport that has given me so much. “I have been really lucky to have played for so long and I have so many great memories. “Obviously my many years at Gloucestershire included the majority of my success but I have really enjoyed the last 18 months meeting some fantastic people at Worcestershire. “I can’t thank the many coaches, team mates and of course supporters enough. “I’m excited about the future, but will miss the game. I wish all the players I have played with the best of luck for the 2016 season and beyond.” Gidman, who joined Worcestershire on a two year contract from Gloucestershire in September 2014, scored 11,622 first class runs and nearly 6,000 list A and T20 runs during his lengthy career. {{ak_sharing}}
