TREMLETT OPENING DOORS IN NEW CAREER

TREMLETT OPENING DOORS IN NEW CAREER BEING AN ASHES WINNER HAS OPENED DOORS FOR CHRIS TREMLETT SINCE HE RETIRED FROM PLAYING LAST SEASON. The 34 year old former Surrey and Hampshire paceman, a key member of England’s 2010/11 Ashes winning squad in Australia, announced his retirement in August and has since gone into business with his former Surrey team-mate Tom Jewell. Tremlett initially worked for The Home Cloud estate agency, which Jewell launched last year, but he is now heading up Source Investments, a Reading-based property investment company. Tremlett works in a very different environment to that he was used to during 15 years of professional cricket, but the profile he gained from playing cricket is helping to establish him in his new chosen career. ” Having a profile from playing cricket has helped a little bit. Hopefully we will build a bit of reputation within cricket. That’s our goal to try and offer our services to some of the cricket guys and those surrounding cricket who have got interests in property,” Tremlett said. ” Hopefully we can use our reputations a bit to build our business. I’ve met a couple of clients who have asked me what I am doing in this job because they are used to watching me bowling cricket balls. ” It’s early days and I still find it a little bit strange doing something completely different. People still associate me with playing cricket but it can only be a positive rather than a negative having a profile. ” At the same time it’s equally difficulty to prove that I am not a cricketer anymore and I am trying to prove myself in a different field. ” I’m trying to build my reputation in a different way. The challenge for me now is to gain experience in a completely different field to cricket.” Tremlett’s international commitments and a series of injuries which required winter operations meant that he did not start thinking about life after cricket until late in his career but conversations with Nick Denning, one of the PCA’s six-strong team of Personal Development and Welfare Managers, focussed his thoughts. ” Most winters I had been involved in something whether it was Academies, England Lions or England tours. I also had seven or eight operations over my career so it was quite hard to take a whole winter out and do something completely different,” Tremlett said. ” I always had a winter where I either had to do four months rehab after an op or been away on a tour. ” So it has always been hard to really switch off and do something completely different. I supposed I started to think about what I might do after cricket at the end of 2013. ” I started speaking to Nick Denning then about the direction I wanted to go in. Property has been a passion of mine and so has personal training. ” I spoke to Nick about doing a personal training course but at the end of 2014 Surrey wanted us in at the start of November so it became difficult to commit to a course that winter. ” For me, it was about getting the brain ticking about what I wanted to do after cricket. Before 2013 I hadn’t really thought about it. I thought I would play cricket until I was 36 or 37 if I could stay fit. ” My mind just suddenly changed in the middle of last year. I felt as fit as I had ever been but In had a couple of injuries and I couldn’t stay on the park. I thought enough is enough and it’s time to do something else. ” It was more the mental trauma of just being injured all the time and having to rehab but having some sort of direction over the last couple of year made it easier to retire rather than just walking away and not having an idea at all.” Tremlett had already started talking with Jewell about the possibility of going into business with him and is now enjoying life in the property investment business. ” Tom set up his business March last year and he did a bit of work for me in finding some investments for me,” Tremlett said ” We spent quite a bit of time together and we came up with an idea that I could add to his business. We got on well at Surrey and saw eye-to-eye from a business point of view and property point of view. ” One thing led to another. Tom has got The Home Cloud and we recently set up Source Investments which sources properties for clients who want long term buy-to-let property portfolios. There are two sides to the business but my involvement is more with the new company. ” We have an office on Reading but we are all over the place I spend a lot of time in London and around the southern counties. Property investment is pretty strong in London and people are geared towards London but there are also strong investments in areas around London. ” There’s a lot of travelling but I don’t think a desk job is for me so the fact that I get to travel around or work from home is quite good. ” Playing cricket, you get used to travelling around and not being in the same place all the time. I think I need a job where I am not sat at a desk nine to five. There’s a bit of variety, travelling and meeting clients and viewing properties which I enjoy.” Tremlett will maintain an involvement in cricket by doing some one-to-one coaching – he is Level Two qualified coach – but, for now, he insists that he is not missing the game. ” Since I have retired it has taken a weight off my shoulders in terms of not having to put my body through hell. That’s the biggest relief for me,” he said. ” It has been a bit of battle the last few years. I had a couple of back operations and knee operations and it became really hard work. ” I have found the adjustment very easy so far. I am not missing the game which is quite nice I suppose, but it’s still early days. ” It’s an exciting business I am involved in. It’s a start-up company which could do good things. I have enjoyed setting it up and seeing where it can go. ” But, who knows who it is going to go? In two years’ time I might miss cricket like hell and might feel completely different. But at the moment it feels like a relief. It’s nice to walk around every day and not feel in absolute agony.” PCA members can check out more via https://www.thepca.co.uk/property-investment.html {{ak_sharing}}
