Rob Key Wins Frizzell PCA Performance Award For May – 02/06/2005 Kent batsman Robert Key has been named as the Frizzell PCA Performance of the Month award winner for May after playing his part in breaking a county record which has stood for more than 100 years. Key Man England man Key scored centuries in both innings in his side’s draw with Surrey during the month, but was his 189 second innings total which saw him stage a third-wicket partnership of 323 in 73 overs alongside South African Martin van Jaarsveld which clinched it – and broke a third-wicket record which had stood for 106 years. Leaders Of The Pack Key is now the third-highest run-scorer in this year’s Frizzell County Championship having hit 646 runs in his 10 innings so far. Only Scott Newman (682) of Surrey and Ed Joyce (693) of Middlesex have scored more. Other Contenders Key pipped England pace-man Steve Harmison and Aussie spin legend Shane Warne to the May award. Harmison – whose Durham side sit at the top of Frizzell County Championship Division Two – took six for 52 including a spell of four for 14 in five overs as the northern county won their fourth game of the season against Lancashire at Old Trafford. Warne, meanwhile, scored his first ever first-class century off only 72 balls to rescue his Hampshire side from a precarious 130 for seven when he came to the crease in the game against Robert Key’s Kent side. Warne is also the leading wicket-taker in the Championship with 33 scalps to his name so far this season. The Prize! Key will receive £ 750 from County Championship sponsors Frizzell for claiming the May Frizzell PCA award. The best performances in the Frizzell County Championship are nominated each month by a panel including county PCA representatives plus ex-England bowler Gladstone Small and England Chairman of Selectors David Graveney.
