Players Back Improvement For All, On And Off The Pitch – 05/10/2006 The outcomes of the 39th PCA Annual General Meeting held at the Belfry on Monday, should ensure that the game of cricket will power ahead in a positive fashion, both on and off the pitch in years to come. Players gave full backing to structural and playing condition proposals that have been debated throughout the season. The most imminent of these, a reduction of overs bowled in first-class cricket from 104 to 96. Players also backed a proposal to allow a new ball to be taken at 80 overs in first-class cricket. The changes would reflect domestic first-class cricket in other countries and bring the game more in line with Test cricket. Players also acknowledged that 2nd XI cricket is a necessary and a vital feeder into first class cricket, but have serious concerns at the level and standards of second team cricket currently being played. Amongst other topics discussed were general employment concerns with regard to minimum wage levels and the implementation of a standard appraisal policy across all counties. The PCA will be working closely with the ECB on the future structure of our domestic game prior to the next broadcasting agreement and all stakeholders on the issues discussed, to ensure our game continues to move forward positively and in order that our national team remain at the forefront of world cricket in all formats.
