Patel stakes claim to be county cricket’s Most Valuable Player – 19/07/12 Two wickets for 42 runs and an innings of 36 from 35 balls in a six-wicket CB40 win over Hampshire on Tuesday night was all in a day’s work for Nottinghamshire allrounder Samit Patel. The 15.63 FTI MVP points he earned ensured he passed Marcus Trescothick to become the highest point scorer since the Professional Cricketers’ Association introduced the rankings system in 2007. That he has achieved the feat in fewer games than the Somerset man is a tribute to the consistency of his performances across each format and means he can now lay claim to being the most valuable player in county cricket. Patel, who currently sits 20th in this year’s overall points table, has only finished out of the top ten on one occasion since the rankings were introduced. And he is hopeful his consistency will lead England selectors to continue to consider him in all three forms of the game despite his omission from the First Test against South Africa. He said, ” This is very important for me as I’m obviously trying to stake a claim in that Test team. I really want to cement a place for this winter. It’s obviously going to be difficult as Ravi is batting particularly well at the moment. I’ve just got to hang in there and take my chance when it comes. ” I wasn’t really expecting to be in the squad for South Africa as I know I’ve not scored enough runs, so I wasn’t disappointed as such. I need to hit some hundreds for Notts between now and the end of the season and keep racking up those MVP points, which are an important gauge of where your game is at.” Patel reaching his milestone against Hampshire will come as no surprise to the south coast side, which has been on the receiving end of his best performance of the season in the last three summers. However, his highest ever performance came in a Friends Provident Trophy match against Durham in 2008, when he hammered 114 runs, took 3/27 and pouched a catch to register 46.19 points. He recorded his highest match average (15.18) across all competitions that season too, on his way to finishing second overall behind Kent’s Martin van Jaarsveld. In topping the all-time overall table, Patel has, for the time being, surpassed notable stalwarts such as Trescothick, his Somerset teammate Peter Trego, Ian Blackwell of Durham and Darren Stevens of Kent. And he is rightly proud of his achievement. He added, ” I didn’t know that I’d gone past Trez but I’m thrilled to bits to have done so. It’s obviously because he’s been injured but it’s a great achievement nonetheless. ” The MVPs are good because they go into the finer details, and are important for assessing your performance. They are certainly more detailed than straight averages. They’re obviously important in first class cricket and other forms of the game. I don’t know if the selectors look at them but it would be interesting to find out.” PCA Assistant Chief Executive, Jason Ratcliffe, said, ” It is a fantastic achievement to have become the all-time leading point scorer in the domestic Most Valuable Player rankings. There is so much more to the system than just batting and bowling averages. It drills down into the minutiae of a player’s game, and gauges how valuable his contribution is in relation to his peers and the circumstances of each match. ” For Samit to have gone past an outstanding operator like Marcus Trescothick in fewer matches shows you the level of performance he has put in on a weekly basis across all competitions for Nottinghamshire. There are also bonuses awarded to those whose runs and wickets contribute to a win for the team, with captains earning points for their command of the side. Bowlers receive higher marks for, among other things, good economy rates, bowling maidens and for dismissing batsmen higher up the order. There are also bonuses for five or more dismissals in an innings. In addition, batting points are handed out for high run rates and the percentage of the team’s runs each batsman contributes. Fielding points are awarded for catches, run outs and stumpings.
