Mascarenhas marks victory with FTI MVP award – 28/08/12 Friends Life t20 winner, Dimitri Mascarenhas, capped a terrific season in the competition by claiming the FTI Most Valuable Player award. The Hampshire Royals captain lead from the front in Cardiff, taking two wickets in both the semi-final and final, before lifting the trophy for the second time in three years. Despite being hampered by a shoulder injury which prevented him batting, Mascarenhas went for less than a run-a-ball for the sixth time this season. His endeavours earned him over 14 MVP points in both games, and left him with an average of 10.2 over the course of the campaign. He now ranks 21st in the all-time statistics for English t20. An overall economy rate of 6.43 runs per over earned him bonus points, as did the fact that all of the batsmen he dismissed were in the top order. Sussex Shark’s, Scott Styris, appeared to have the FTI MVP title in the bag when he claimed 3/22 against Yorkshire in the semi-final. But his team’s failure to reach the final left him three points behind Mascarenhas. The New Zealander, whose 37 ball century against Gloucestershire was one of the highlights of this year’s t20, hit 204 runs at a strike rate of 191 runs per 100 balls. He also took seven wickets at just 6.60 runs per over. Styris is one of five overseas players in the top ten of the Friends Life t20 MVP rankings. Fourth on the list was Yorkshire’s South African batsman David Miller. Phillip Hughes of Worcestershire is next, with Abdul Razzaq at six, and Mitchell Starc completing the list at number nine. Their strong showing follows the trend of overseas players performing well in the competition, with Chaminda Vaas and Andrew McDonald winning the award in 2010 and 2011. Of all the competing counties, Yorkshire were the best represented, with three players in the top ten, whilst Sussex had two in Styris and Luke Wright. The FTI MVP rankings reward players for every run scored, every wicket taken and every catch held. There are also bonuses awarded to those whose runs and wickets contribute to a win for the team, with captains earning points for their command of the side. Bowlers receive higher marks for, among other things, good economy rates, bowling maidens and for dismissing batsmen higher up the order. There are also bonuses for five or more dismissals in an innings. In addition, batting points are handed out for high run rates and the percentage of the team’s runs each batsman contributes.
