Malan produces PCA MVP best by England debutant

Malan produces PCA MVP best by England debutant Dawid Malan’s blistering 44-ball 78 against South Africa in Cardiff yesterday was the best performance by an England debutant in a T20 International in the history of the Professional Cricketers’ Association Most Valuable Player Rankings. Malan, who was presented with his cap by former England captain Nasser Hussain before the start of play, pummelled 12 fours and two sixes and contributed 43 per cent of England’s runs. The Middlesex left-hander earned 22 batting points towards a match haul of 24 PCA MVP points, the best by an England T20 International debutant since the PCA MVP system was introduced in 2007 and the tenth best performance in the format. Alex Hales leads the all-time England PCA MVP performance table in T20 Internationals with 43 points for his 116 – the first T20 century by an England batsman – against Sri Lanka in Chittagong in the ICC World T20 in March 2014. Dawid Malan enjoys some big hitting on debut. The PCA MVP Rankings system identifies the match-winners and key influencers of matches throughout the domestic season. The formula takes into account conditions, quality of opposition, captaincy and strike-rates as well as runs scored and wickets taken. Joe Root, England’s new Test captain, still leads this season’s overall England PCA MVP despite sitting out the three T20 Internationals against South Africa. But Root’s lead has been cut to 25 points by Eoin Morgan, England’s white ball captain, who became the second player to 100 points during the South Africa series. Hales is in third place in the overall England rankings with 93 points, with Liam Plunkett fourth on 90 and Ben Stokes fifth on 85 points. In T20 Internationals, Jonny Bairstow heads the England rankings with 29 points, one more than Jason Roy with Malan’s runs in Cardiff being enough to take him into third place and Tom Curran, who impressed on his international debut in Taunton, in fourth. Morgan has most career T20 International points with 446 with Stuart Broad second on 375, Kevin Pietersen third on 360 and Hales fourth on 350. But Broad is top of the all-time overall England PCA MVP with 3,260 points across all formats. Jimmy Anderson is second just 13 points off the 3,000 landmark with Alastair Cook third on 2,443.
