Harmison Retires From One-day Cricket – 21/12/2006 England have named a 16-man one-day squad to take on Australia and New Zealand in the Commonwealth Bank Series starting next month. Northamptonshire left-arm spinner Monty Panesar, who took eight wickets in the third Test against Australia, has been included in a one-day squad for the first time but there is no place for Steve Harmison, who has announced his retirement from one-day international cricket. Leicestershire wicket-keeper Paul Nixon, who toured Pakistan and Sri Lanka with England’s Test squad in 2000-01, has also been named along with Hampshire pace bowler Chris Tremlett, who won three ODI caps against Australia and Bangladesh in 2005. The selectors will appoint a captain to lead the squad at the end of the current Ashes Test Series against Australia. Chairman of selectors David Graveney said: ” Michael Vaughan has been included in the one-day squad subject to fitness. "He has made excellent progress with his recovery from injury but we feel that it would not be appropriate to announce the captaincy of the one-day side at this stage and will delay any announcement until after the Test series. ” Marcus Trescothick has acted as reserve wicket-keeper on previous tours but, as he is unavailable, we have decided to include two wicket-keepers in this squad. ” Paul Nixon is a vastly experienced cricketer who knows his game inside out and will bring a great deal of energy to the dressing room. "Paul has been very successful with Leicestershire in one-day cricket and he will compete for the wicket-keeping position with Chris Read. ” Chris Tremlett has made great progress this winter – he impressed the Academy management during their training camp in Perth – and we believe he has the physical attributes required to be a real threat on Australian pitches in this one-day series. ” Monty Panesar’s experience of one-day cricket is limited but he has shown that he is comfortable on the international stage and we view his selection as a bold, attacking move which will strengthen our ability to take wickets.” Harmison, who was a member of England’s ICC Champions Trophy squad in India, today announced his retirement from one-day international cricket. Rikki Clarke and Michael Yardy are the other members of the ICC Champions Trophy squad to be omitted from the 16-man party to take on New Zealand and Australia.
