The women’s and men’s MVP Teams of the Month for July have been selected based on the PCA’s Most Valuable Player Rankings, powered by OFX.
Using the MVP’s unique algorithms, players have been selected based on their excellent contributions with the bat, ball and in the field across the month of July. These teams are the fourth iteration of PCA’s Team of the Month for the current domestic season.
For the women’s side, Durham’s Suzie Bates opens the batting and leads the side following a month where she scored 333 runs at an average of 47.57 to earn herself 113.23 points, the most in the women’s game. The 37-year-old capped off any excellent month which also saw her win the Vitality Blast Women’s Player of the Year.
The strong batting lineup also consists of Hampshire’s Rhianna Southby and Warwickshire’s Davina Perrin. The 18-year-old recently registered her maiden List A century against Surrey at Edgbaston after scoring 113 whilst batting at number four.
The Blaze’s pair of Kathryn Bryce and Georgia Elwiss reunite together after a month’s absence to provide some all-round depth to the team. The duo scored 466 runs and took 16 wickets between them in July.
Lancashire, meanwhile, have the highest contingent of players in this month’s MVP team with three representatives. These include Emma Lamb, Mahika Gaur and Alana King. The latter is this team’s leading spinner having taken 19 wickets to see herself achieve 65.01 bowling points, the most in July.
The men’s team is selected based on the MVP points earned in the Vitality Blast as well as Rothesay County Championship rounds which started in July. These include the entirety of round 11 and 12 even though day four of the 12th round was played on 1 August.
Lancashire all-rounder Chris Green captains the team after contributing 279 runs and 27 wickets across formats to secure an MVP points haul of 180.76, the most in July.
Worcestershire are represented by two players in the side with Ethan Brookes and Tom Taylor. The former earned the most batting points last month while the latter secured the most bowling points. Brookes scored 452 runs at an average of 56.5 to finish with 135.69 batting points.
Taylor, on the other hand, got 104.34 bowling points after taking 19 wickets. The 30-year-old is currently the leading wicket-taker across both divisions of the County Championship with 43 scalps to his name.
Due to the sheer amount of all-round performances, the side has batting depth all the way down to number eight. These include Rehan Ahmed along with the Surrey pair of Will Jacks and Dan Lawrence. The latter even kept wickets in two Blast matches in July.
The PCA’s MVP system works by comparing a player’s accomplishments against the expected performance for that game. Runs and wickets achieved at each ground are also considered and compared to the average. This enables players to score or lose MVP points on every ball through CricViz’s extensive historical database, the rankings are a true reflection of performance.
The teams have been selected using a traditional, balanced side. This meant that Warwickshire’s Issy Wong missed out with the team already having other all-rounders with more MVP points in Bryce and Elwiss.
Likewise in the men’s game, Lancashire’s Phil Salt missed out to Michael Pepper as the team’s opening batter and wicketkeeper since the Essex player had significantly more batting points compared to the 28-year-old.
