New Beginnings - Under The Lid with Nat Sciver-Brunt
Hear from Nat Sciver-Brunt as she joins hosts Jack Brooks and Katherine Sciver-Brunt
Quizzed by her wife and Brooks, Nat, on her first interview as a mother, admitted: “It’s been a whirlwind, trying to balance helping Katherine out and looking after Theo, alongside trying to rehab my Achillies and becoming England captain, it’s been overwhelming at times.”
There’s also another addition to the Under The Lid family with Brooks welcoming baby Charlie: “Another boy for me, so I now have two boys under two, this time round I’m coaching with Surrey flexibly with the need to be at home for the boys. I also got engaged this winter and I’m very busy but great to be back for series two.”
With the conversation moving to Nat’s recent acceptance of the England captaincy role, the all-rounder said: “I’ve been having lots of conversations with ‘Lottie’ (Charlotte Edwards) and sharing ideas and seeing how we want to move the team forward. They asked me if I would do it and I think they were worried I wouldn’t say yes but I was always going to accept it, I started my career when ‘Lottie’ was captain so it feels full circle.”
Asked by co-host Brooks on what she wanted her captaincy style to look like, Nat continued: “The way I go about cricket and my personality I’m not going to change too much from that. I’m quite laid back, I want a light-heartedness about it and having that open communications with everyone and I want to empower players to be the best version of themselves. Hopefully we can build some trust and really have that caring nature for everyone and use that to motivate the team. The good part I’ll get from leading the team is that I can get enjoyment out of helping others.”
Wife and co-host Katherine admitted that the captaincy was always on the cards for Nat, despite the timing: “I’m very proud of her, it’s something that I wanted for her and something I know she’s always wanted but it was scary recently with the baby as well. I think it’s going to be a perfect combination of the older players and young ones and I think Nat is the perfect person to pass that knowledge on.”
The England international with 259 matches, 7,483 runs and 181 wickets to her name also exclusively revealed how the selection policy for England women will work going forwards: “The selection plan is that because of my high work load, I won’t be part of choosing the full squads and then once that decision is made I’ll be part of selecting the 11 for the matches.”
An exciting new feature was also introduced on the first episode of series two with ‘Take Five’ exploring five questions to try and get to know the guest a bit better.
The much loved ‘Final Round’ quiz returned with some new rules and a brand-new sponsor and prize. Simplexity Travel are offering the ultimate winter experience for two for the winner of this year’s quiz – a great incentive for guests to touch up on their quizzing skills.
