SECURITY STATUS

Terrorism

Members are advised to exercise normal precautions and vigilance when in Australia. The UK Government currently advises that terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Australia, with 15 people killed in a terrorist attack in Sydney in 2025. Members are advised to remain vigilant and stay aware of surroundings at all times.

Natural Environment

Australia has a wonderful natural climate but a high risk of bush fires from October to February. They can start and change direction very quickly. Rip currents can happen at any beach and are the main hazard for swimmers and surfers. Australia also has a number of dangerous wildlife including crocodiles, sharks, dangerous insects and snakes.

Healthcare Facilities

Members are covered under the PCA’s Travel Insurance policy and should have private medical insurance as per their contract. Urgent and essential healthcare treatment is free under the UK-Australia Reciprocal Healthcare Scheme. The government also advises taking sensible precautions regarding belongings and being aware of petty scams.

Safety & Security

Members are advised to take sensible precautions when travelling around Australia, particularly in busy city centres, tourist areas and on public transport. Keep personal belongings secure, avoid leaving valuables unattended and remain alert to petty theft or scams. Take extra care when travelling at night, plan journeys in advance where possible.

CULTURAL AWARENESS

ANTI- CORRUPTION

  • Players are covered by the ECB Anti-Corruption rules and the local anti-corruption rules in the country where the tournament is being played. Players are also covered by UK Bribery laws, meaning that accepting or offering a bribe overseas is still a criminal offence in the UK.
  • Even when overseas, players’ obligation to report anything suspicious does not change. Players must report all suspected corrupt approaches and anything else they are suspicious of.
  • ECB Anti-Corruption staff are available for players to report to directly, or players can report via the PCA.
  • There will be an Anti-Corruption Official assigned to the team or the competition. They should host a briefing before the competition to explain how to report concerns.
  • Many larger T20 leagues have invested in anti-corruption support recently, and some have the ICC running anti-corruption for the tournament.
  • Players can report concerns to the PCA for onward reporting to the ECB.
  • To report directly to the ECB Anti-Corruption Unit, email anti-corruption@ecb.co.uk or call/message +44 7407 195 730 by SMS or WhatsApp.
  • Players should follow three simple rules to protect themselves: identify a corrupt approach, reject any corrupt approach and report any corrupt approach.
  • Corrupt approaches often start with a seemingly innocent invitation, such as dinner, travel or gifts. Before accepting such offers, players should stop and think about why the person is offering it and what their motivation may be. Players should be particularly vigilant if they do not know the person well.
  • Sponsor events have been used in cricket as opportunities to make corrupt approaches. Players should be vigilant around gifts and other offers made at these events.
  • In franchise cricket, team owners or people working for teams have been corruptors in previous tournaments. Warning signs can include unusual team selections, going against bowling plans or pre-arranged strategy without good reason, or non-cricket staff having a direct say on selection or play. Players should report any of these suspicions to Anti-Corruption.

You are covered by the ECB Anti-Corruption rules and the local Anti-Corruption rules to where the tournament is being played.

You are also covered by UK Bribery laws – this means that accepting or offering a bribe overseas is still a criminal offence in the UK.

Even though you are overseas your obligation to report anything suspicious does not change. You MUST report all suspected corrupt approaches and anything else you are suspicious of – some examples will be provided.

ECB Anti-Corruption staff are available for you to report to if you wish – you are able to report directly or via the PCA.

Insurance Information

County Contract Winter Insurance

All county contracted cricketers are required to maintain insurance which protects the County in the event the player is made unavailable due to injury sustained at a franchise tournament during the winter. This is a term of the player’s county contract with their club. Players are required to complete this prior to travelling and it costs XXX.

Travel Insurance

As a current PCA member, players are covered by the PCA travel insurance policy along with partner and children when they travel with the player. There are specific terms that apply to unmarried partners.

Career Ending Injury Insurance

As a contracted cricketer and PCA member, players benefit from two policies in the event their career is ended due to injury. Whilst having this coverage is positive, all players should consider if they need additional cover in place on top of the above.

Franchise Contract Insurance

Playing franchise cricket can be lucrative and rewarding but is dependent on players being fit and able to fulfil those contracts. Injuries can rule players out of franchise cricket and cause them to lose the value of these contracts. There are multiple insurance brokers who can support players in providing insurance coverage on franchise salaries to protect against the potential of being ruled out due to injury. The PCA partners with Miller Insurance to support players with insurance options.
