Residential Graduate Assistant

JOB DESCRIPTION

We have designed the role to give successful applicants an all-encompassing experience of independent school life. The role is likely to suit recent graduates who are interested in pursuing a career in education, understanding that the role is fast-paced and time-consuming during School terms yet enormously rewarding for the right people.

Working in areas of the School that befit each individual’s experience, abilities and aspirations, the Graduate Assistants will be closely supervised by a senior member of staff within a formal structure of professional development, training and feedback that will enable them to prepare for their future careers in education.

In addition, the Graduate Assistants will attend regular in-service training alongside the teaching staff, covering all aspects of our work from the latest teaching and learning developments to important changes in legislation. For an exceptional candidate, there may in due course be the opportunity to move into formal teacher training, supported by the School, if this aligns with a particular staffing requirement that the School has at the time.

Please see below for the key responsibilities and duties for all Graduate Assistants. This list is not exhaustive but gives an accurate flavour of the role:
General responsibilities and expectations:
> Support the aims and objectives of the Mill Hill School Foundation.
> Comply with the Mill Hill School Foundation Health and Safety Policy.
> Promote the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and of any class or group of pupils supported by you.
> Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons for whom you are responsible and with whom you came into contact.
> Maintain good order and discipline among the pupils and safeguard their health and safety both when they are on the School premises and when they are engaged in authorised school activities elsewhere in your care.
> Attend a 5 day NPLQ course in either late June or the end of August.

Boarding responsibilities:
> Support the Housemaster/mistress or Houseparent in the smooth running of all aspects of boarding life.
> Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons for whom you are responsible and with whom you came into contact.
> Participate in, and run, activity sessions in the evening and weekend activity programme.
> Lead a tutor group within the boarding house.
Contribution to co-curricular programme of the school:
> Support the School’s weekend programme across all 3 terms.
> Fully support the Co-curricular life of the School, which dovetail with the candidate’s previous background. The roles will focus in the Sport/PE/ Strength and Conditioning
> The Graduate Assistants whose focus is sport would play a leading role in developing our 30+ Sports Scholars. Our six current Graduate Assistants support their ‘own Sports Scholars’ (usually totalling 8) to achieve their goals, whilst running more general group workshops for scholars of the lower year groups. They also support the Physical Education Department in delivering the curriculum, assisting in delivering practical and theoretical elements of Physical Education and covering lifeguarding duties within Physical Education lessons. A significant part of the Graduates time is involved with them leading sports teams, leadership activities and clubs/clinics across the full academic year.

Developmental opportunities/responsibilities:
> Act as a teaching assistant during some timetabled lessons.
> Support colleagues in academic departments with routine administration.
> Support the organisation and delivery of the School’s Open Days.
> Attend departmental meetings.
> Be a staff presence on educational visits/other trips organised by the School, where appropriate.

Other responsibilities:
> Carry out the above duties and responsibilities and additional duties and responsibilities if so directed by the Head of Mill Hill School or her representative within the confines of the Mill Hill School Foundation.
> Work in or for the School from Monday to Saturday during term-time.
> Have a flexible approach to hours of duty.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:
> To have graduated with a good honours degree by the time the post commences.
> Awareness, understanding and, ideally, experience of issues relating to safeguarding the health, welfare and safety of children.
> High personal and professional standards.
> Positive working relationships with colleagues and the ability to work as a member of a team.
> Experience in the school’s major sports (Rugby, Hockey, Football, Netball, Cricket).
> The ability to offer other activities outside the previously mentioned would be beneficial.
> Excellent time management, IT and organisational skills.
> Ability to take responsibility and to show initiative.
> An interest in current developments in education.
> Ability to convey infectious enthusiasm for a variety of areas of School life.
> Ability to form and maintain appropriate relationships and personal boundaries with children and young people.
> Ability to manage practical sessions effectively and safely.
> Motivation to work with children and young people.
> Positive attitude to managing behaviour.
