Steffan JonesAfter spending 20-years as a professional sportsman, I recently retired from professional cricket. I prided myself on my general fitness throughout my career. I identified early on that I would not be able to compete with many of my peers in terms of natural ability. I therefore put all my focus on something I believed I could be far better at than any other cricketer – my physical preparedness. I am qualified both as a Level 3 coach and as a Strength and Conditioner. I used the knowledge I had from my Sport Science degree and continued researching into new methods of training to gain new levels of strength, speed, agility, power and game conditioning. Over the years I began to realise what worked and what did not. I tried just weightlifting, but that didn't work because I lost agility and added too much bulk. I tried simply running, but that didn't work because I was weak and kept pulling my hamstring. I therefore see myself as a perfect case study on what cricketers should and shouldn't do. It is a balance of everything. This is why I have set up my own online cricket clinic, with a view of opening a performance centre to cater for the needs of all cricketers. I will design their Strength and Conditioning programs as well as their Technical program. I look at the cricketer as a whole and not just individual parts. I believe Strength and Conditioning should be integrated into the cricket specific sessions. It is not a separate program. I am here to build the athlete within the cricketer, but mindful that he or she is still a cricketer. My website, www.sjenhancingperformance.com, is now live. Simply click on the program you require and I will do my best to improve your cricket. |
