Rain Dampens Impressive Sri Lanka
The OneMove PCA Masters Series kicked off on Tuesday with an eagerly anticipated Twenty20 match against Sri Lanka at Arundel Castle in Sussex.
After winning the toss, PCA Masters captain Chris Adams asked the Sri Lankans to bat and his side struck early when Chris Lewis had opener Chamara Kapugedera caught behind by Jimmy Adams with the score on 12.
Captain Mahela Jayawardene joined Sanath Jayasuriya at the crease and the pair soon got to grips with the shortened Twenty20 format, hitting a flurry of boundaries. The second wicket stand of 75, added in less than six overs, was broken when Jayasuriya was run out for 36 from 29 deliveries.
Jayawardene continued to entertain a large crowd, hitting fourteen boundaries, including two 6’s when he was eventually bowled by off spinner Shaun Udal for 79. Despite the best efforts of both teams, the heavy rain finally brought the Sri Lankan innings to a close, with the score on 180-3 from sixteen overs.
Further play was not possible and the match was abandoned after a pitch inspection.
The PCA Masters play again on Thursday (15th) at the Rosebowl against Hampshire as part of spectacular day of cricket, including the main feature of England versus Sri Lanka in their first ever Twenty20 encounter.
