PCA Masters v Northern Universities
On Friday June 24, the PCA Masters travelled to Seaton Carew Cricket Club, near Hartlepool to take on the Northern Universities in The Northern Rock WISE Federation Challenge, in the form of two Twenty20 matches.
The Masters side contained four West Indian internationals in the form of Phil Simmons, Merv Dillon, Collis King and Sherwin Campbell, along with former county professionals Martin Speight, Simon Kellet, Steve Lugsden and Jimmy Hindson. The Northern Universities CC squad is made of star players from the six Northern Universities.
Northern Universities won the toss and invited the PCA Masters to bat in the first match. The former professionals enjoyed the excellent batting conditions at Seaton Carew CC with Sherwin Campbell dealing in regular boundaries, guiding his side to an imposing total of 180-5 from their 20 overs. In reply, Northern Universities lost early wickets with quick bowler Merv Dillon testing the students with pace and bounce and the home side were eventually all out for 90.
The second Twenty20 match proved a much closer affair. Northern Universities stepped up their performances in the field to restrict the PCA Masters to 127-7 from their allotted overs. The Masters then relied on the off spin of Phil Simmons to close the students challenge out as they were all out just ten runs short in an exciting climax to the day.
