NEGOTIATOR SERVICE

The PCA launched a new service for its members in 2005, the services of a negotiator to help you get the best deal on your contract with your new County or on renewing with your existing County.

Here’s how it works:

  • If you have been offered a new contract by your existing County or a new County and want some help finalising the deal to your best advantage, the PCA will provide an expert to help you and conduct the face to face negotiations with you or on your behalf if you wish.
  • The service will cost you nothing.
  • The negotiators are experienced experts with insider knowledge of cricket and proven negotiation skills. Most of them are qualified lawyers and former professional players. On enquiry, the PCA will tell you who from the approved list is available to help you.
  • You will discuss the offer you’ve had with the negotiator by phone and agree where it might be improved and what you hope to get out of it – not just money, but length of contract, benefits and bonus schemes. Once you’ve agreed what you’re trying to get, the negotiator will set up a meeting with the relevant County official and attend that meeting to try and get the best deal for you.
  • You can choose whether to go to that meeting along with the negotiator or not. The idea is that the negotiator emerges from that meeting with an improved offer from the County. A few more phone calls to and fro to finalise matters may be necessary, but we do not envisage further face to face meetings being needed.

If you are happy with the deal and the negotiators advice, sign the contract and get on with playing the best cricket you can.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use whomever I choose?
Subject to availability and (sometimes) location, yes. We ask that you understand that all our negotiators have other jobs and commitments and may not be able to help you, but all are well qualified and experienced and we are confident that they will all do a good job for you.

When should I get in touch and how?
As soon as you get the offer contact Ian Smith (details below), who will administer the service for the PCA and he will start the ball rolling for you. In fact, if you’re expecting an offer within a week or two, contact Ian to tee things up for when the offer does arrive.

What will Ian Smith or the negotiator need to know?
How much you earned in the most recent season; how long your contract was for; what the new offer is and what your immediate impression of it is; a realistic assessment of your market value (i.e. have you had a good season, are you playing well, have you been injured – have your stats ready); how old you are, whether you’re capped or uncapped and any other information that may affect what you could expect to get from your next contract. Be honest and open – the negotiator is there to help you and neither of you will benefit from 'surprises' in the negotiation.
