England's Captain is top of the Test FTI MVP - 30/05/12
A resurgent Andrew Strauss has stormed to the top of the Test FTI MVP after back-to-back centuries against the West Indies. The England captain has amassed 309 runs from four innings having followed up his 122 at Lord’s with 141 and 45 at Trent Bridge. Strauss has contributed 27.35% of England’s runs at a strike rate of 48 runs per 100 balls, which is exactly the same pace of scoring as when he last topped the Test FTI MVP in 2008-09. In the four Test series over that period against New Zealand, South Africa, India and the West Indies (the latter as Captain), he scored 1,239 runs, including 6 hundreds and 3 fifties. Since then, the England captain has finished no higher than seventh in the Test FTI MVP, but has ranked higher in the one-day game. He topped the Summer ODI FTI MVP in 2010 with 807 runs, having scored 2 hundreds and 6 fifties at a mightily impressive strike rate of 96 runs per 100 balls. He maintained that one-day form through the World Cup in 2011, scoring 158 against India and 2 other fifties in the Winter 2010-11 ODI FTI MVP, but retired at the top of his form in limited overs cricket. While the plan for Strauss was to concentrate on his Test performances, he managed just 3 half-centuries in 20 innings across the summer 2011 and winter 2011-12 campaigns. Thankfully, he now looks back to his best. England’s pace triumvirate of Stuart Broad, Jimmy Anderson and Tim Bresnan are second, third and fourth respectively. Broad has taken 14 wickets, 11 of which came at Lord’s. Anderson and Bresnan both have 9 wickets, but the former has earned more points because 6 of his victims were top order batsmen compared to Bresnan’s 4. Anderson’s economy rate of 2.18 per over is also marginally better than Bresnan’s 2.85.
