Michael Powell made his county debut for Warwickshire in 1996, and was capped in 1999. He played for England Under 19 on their tour to Sri Lanka in 1993-94 and was selected for England A against West Indies in 2001.

In June 1998 he became the first uncapped Warwickshire player for 49 years to carry his bat against Nottinghamshire at Edgbaston, and was appointed captain of the side from 2001 until 2003. He has scored over 7000 first-class runs and has a highest first-class score of 236 against Oxford University in 2001.
