Nigel Plews

Nigel Plews

Nigel Plews, the former international umpire, has died aged 74. Plews had been battling kidney cancer since being diagnosed with the illness in March 2007 and had been receiving support from the PCA Benevolent Fund.

Plews was one of the few umpires who had never played first-class cricket. He had played and officiated in club cricket in Nottingham when he was elevated to the first-class panel in 1982. He later officiated in 11 Tests and 16 ODIs between 1986 and 1996, before retiring from umpiring in 1999. He took up umpiring full-time after retiring from a 25-year career with the Nottingham City Police Force, where he was a Fraud Squad Detective.

David Graveney Vice President – Benevolent Fund said “Nigel's passing is a sad loss to the cricketing family. In my mind he was the perfect umpire, imposing in stature, but always fair in action. He never attempted to dominate the game but preferred to calm players with a quiet word. Since retiring from the ' white coat', his influence continued on various committees at Lords. Personally I will miss him, he was as good a friend as you could have. All at the PCA send our sympathies to Nigel's family at this sad time.”
