After 2nd Test England v PakistanStuart Broad and Monty Panesar were the England cricketers to emerge with most credit from defeat in the second Test against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi. Broad has leapfrogged Graeme Swann, Matt Prior and Jonathan Trott to head the winter Test FTI MVP continuing on from his summer’s work, which saw him clinch the summer Test FTI MVP after a stunning series against India. Broad scored 239 runs and took 33 wickets in Tests in 2011, and while some of his colleagues have struggled to adapt to subcontinent conditions he has already scored 83 runs and taken 8 wickets from the two Tests. In Abu Dhabi he took 4-47 in Pakistan’s first innings and followed that up with 58 not out off just 62 balls taking an aggressive approach to the opposition’s spinners. Broad leads his county colleague Graeme Swann by just 2 points in the Test FTI MVP but it was Panesar, who did himself the most favours in his first Test match for 30 months. The slow left-armer got through more than 71 overs in the Abu Dhabi match conceding runs at just over 2 runs per over and it was his attritional spell in the second innings, which choked the life out of Pakistan’s batting. He returned figures of 38.2-18-62-6 taking his MVP points tally for the match to 36 elevating himself to third in the winter Test rankings. Swann took 5 wickets in the match to become the leading wicket-taker in the winter Test FTI MVP and contributed a run-a-ball 15 in England’s first innings. The England off-spinner has batted as many times in the two Tests against Pakistan as he did in the whole of England’s Test summer in 2011 and has already scored 88 runs to last summer’s 59. Swann leads the overall winter FTI MVP by 2 points from Trott. Trott and Prior are the leading Test batsmen this winter contributing 25.45 and 20.99 batting points respectively. Trott has scored most runs (141) including a best of 74 in the first innings at Abu Dhabi, while Prior’s first innings effort in Dubai (70 not out) was the most impressive batting performance of the winter contributing over 36% of the team’s runs. Jimmy Anderson lies fifth in the Test FTI MVP. He has 41 runs – which is the same as Eoin Morgan and more than both Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen – and has taken 5 wickets. England’s spearhead has been excellent on pitches that have offered him little assistance and he has been both threatening and economical as a concession rate of 2.49 runs per over suggests. The third Test begins on Friday with England’s players keen to restore some pride and rack up some much needed FTI MVP points.
