Van Jaarvsveld Still Leads As Prolific Trescothick Enters MVP Race - 26/08/2008

Plenty of MVP round ups this summer have started with the name Martin van Jaarsveld and Kent's South African batting colossus still heads the overall table. He has scored 1823 runs, taken 11 wickets (including 3-18 against Lancashire this week) and pouched 39 catches, which is more than some of the keepers on the circuit. Van Jaarsveld won the FPT MVP and is on course to take the LVCC MVP title, too.

Van Jaarsveld's closest challenger for the overall title is his county colleague and compatriot Ryan McLaren, who jumps to second having scored 587 runs and taken 72 wickets across all cricket. The all-rounder, who lies fifth in the LVCC and finished in the top twenty of both the FPT and T20 MVPs took 2-16 in the pro40 against Yorkshire to jump over some of his closest rivals.

Tim Bresnan, drafted into the England one-day squad but released to play for Yorkshire once again demonstrated his frugal qualities with the ball returning figures of 1-10 from five overs against Kent. He has scored 624 runs and taken 71 wickets across all forms.

Ravi Bopara and Samit Patel have had quiet weeks in the MVP as they are both involved with England. They lie in fourth and fifth respectively with Bopara - who has been away with England for chunks of the summer - having the best points-per-game ratio (16.64) of any of the leading contenders. He has scored 1631 runs and taken 42 wickets, Patel 1191 and 34.

If the leaders are ever inclined to look over their shoulders in the run-in to this year's MVP the man looming largest in the chasing pack is former England opener Marcus Trescothick. The Somerset southpaw is the leading run-scorer in the country with 2025 runs across all four competitions and currently heads the Pro40 MVP having scored 493 runs from just six games. His 184 in the week against Gloucestershire has seen him close to within 53 points of van Jaarsveld in the overall race.

Kent's Pakistani duo Azhar Mahmood and Yasir Arafat have been out of action for Kent since losing the FPT final at Lord's. They occupy seventh and eighth respectively.

In ninth, Ryan ten Doeschate maintained his impressive showing this season with scores this week of 94 and 46 against Worcestershire taking his tally to 1163 runs in addition to 48 wickets.

Kabir Ali, who is ranked second in the LVCC MVP, completes the top ten with 383 runs and 80 wickets. He has taken 61 of those wickets in the Championship but remember second division scalps count less than those taken in the first division.
