Collingwood Wins Frizzell Award For July — 03/08/2005
Durham’s Paul Collingwood has joined fellow England hopeful Chris Tremlett as a Frizzell County Championship Performance of the Month winner this summer — giving the England Test selectors another gentle reminder of his form.
Tremlett Stars In June
It was Hampshire bowler Tremlett who collected the prestigious award from County Championship sponsors Frizzell in June, cementing his place as 12th man in the first Ashes Test squad following his debut for the England One Day International team.
Now Collingwood has succeeded him as the Performance of the Month winner thanks to three successive centuries in the space of seven days during July. He hit 191 and 101 against Leicestershire, and 181 in the match against Somerset at Taunton to help take Durham clear at the top of Frizzell County Championship Division Two and keep them favourites for promotion.
Collingwood’s team-mate Gareth Breese was among the players closest to Collingwood in the monthly vote for the award following his haul of nine wickets for 138 in that match at Somerset.
While Graeme Smith of Somerset was also in the running with an innings of 311 which saw him score at a rate of more than a run per ball against Leicestershire.
Collingwood will receive £750 from County Championship sponsors Frizzell for claiming the July Frizzell PCA award. The best performances in the Frizzell County Championship are nominated each month by a panel including county PCA representatives plus ex-England bowler Gladstone Small and England Chairman of Selectors David Graveney.
