England Qualified Players in the County FTI MVP - 06/09/10

After last week's focus on the younger protagonists in the FTI MVP, this report will concentrate on the leading England-qualified players making waves in this year's campaign. The first of those is South African born and raised all-rounder, Neil Carter, who has opened up a decisive 77-point lead in the overall FTI MVP after returning figures of 3-46 and 5-60 in Warwickshire's LV= County Championship victory over Kent at Edgbaston.

Carter has already won two MVP of the month awards and has now scored 1225 runs and taken 78 wickets across all forms. His eight Kent scalps have seen him leapfrog Adil Rashid at the top of the LV=CC FTI MVP, too, while in the top 100 players his points-per-game average can only be beaten by Notts' Andre Adams. All Carter's nearest challengers had quiet weeks either through inactivity or disappointing performances, so it was left to his Warwickshire new-ball partner-in-crime Chris Woakes to make a move up the top ten.

Woakes returned figures of 6-52 and 5-45 in the Kent match as well as contributing 30 and 51 with the bat in a low scoring encounter, the latter knock earning him bonus points as it represented more than 30% of the team total (36%). Woakes is eighth in the overall FTI MVP with 587 runs and 78 wickets, and fifth in the LV=CC FTI MVP with 417 runs and 48 wickets.

Adil Rashid holds on to second place but only 42 points separates him from Tom Smith in 10th. They are two young players with potentially big England futures, while hopefully the same can be said of Samit Patel in third. Across all forms Rashid has 851 runs and 87 wickets compared to Patel's 1467 and 51. Where Rashid has been more productive in the LV=CC (679 and 51 - ranked second compared to Patel's 541 and 23 - ranked 47), Patel has excelled in the shorter forms. He is ranked fourth in the Clydesdale Bank 40 FTI MVP with 467 runs and 11 wickets compared to Rashid's 44 runs and 10 wickets (110th), while in the Friends Provident t20 he finished third with 459 runs and 17 wickets compared to Rashid's 128 runs and 26 wickets (13th).

Marcus Trescothick is England-qualified but has retired from international cricket. The former England opener and last year's MVP has had a terrific month, which has seen him fly up the rankings. He has scored 2098 runs across all forms, 1260 in the LV=CC, 572 in the FP t20 and 266 in the CB40.

Darren Stevens is ninth in the overall FTI MVP with 1454 runs and 38 wickets. The former Leicestershire man has regularly opened the bowling for Kent in all forms this year, which has seen his greatest return with the ball of any MVP campaign, but his bowling workload has seen his runs dry up in recent weeks. He scored four LV=CC hundreds in five matches from the end of May till the beginning of June but since then his highest score in the championship has been 34 from his last nine innings. Stevens was rewarded for his excellent performances with selection to the Lions where he made significant contributions in the triangular series wins over India A and West Indies A.

Smith has scored 1255 runs and taken 55 runs across all forms. He had a fabulous FP t20 campaign with 543 runs and 13 wickets and after a slow start in the championship has become one of Lancashire's consistent performers with 537 runs and 29 wickets.

Heavy run-scorers (see downloadable run charts below) and potential England batsmen Jimmy Adams and James Hildreth are eleventh and twelfth respectively.
