FTI MVP NEWS

Young players are moving up the FTI MVP - 01/09/10

Having seen overseas stars dominate the Friends Provident t20 FTI MVP, we can report that as the players enter the final month of the season 8 out of the top 10 in the overall FTI MVP are England-qualified. Of these only Adil Rashid is under 23 years of age. The Yorkshire leg-spinner has scored 833 runs and taken 87 wickets across all three forms, which sees him ranked second with 543 points 35 points behind Neil Carter, who tops the FTI MVP rankings with 67 wickets and 1167 runs. So where are all the other young players?

The next highest-ranked player under the age of 23 is Warwickshire's Chris Woakes in 16th. The 21-year-old bowling all-rounder has scored 536 runs and taken 65 wickets. He recorded his maiden century against Hampshire in the LV=County Championship back in April and has been consistent with the ball across all forms. He has amassed 428 points and has missed games for his county whilst on England Lions duty.

Moeen Ali is one place back from Woakes in 17th. Ali is 22 and has been Worcestershire's stand-out batsman this season. He has racked up 1691 runs and taken 27 wickets with his off-breaks. He has scored two centuries and seven fifties in the LV=CC, where he is ranked 57th but his most successful format has been the FP t20 where he is ranked 12th with 385 runs and 13 wickets.

Adam Lyth is one of the highest run-scorers in the country. The 22-year-old was the first to a 1000 runs in the LV=CC and has now made 1942 runs across all forms. He is ranked 34th in the overall FTI MVP and 14th in the LV=CC FTI MVP with 1382 runs including three hundreds and nine fifties.

James Taylor, last year's PCA young player of the year, who is still only 20, is ranked 50th overall with 1615 runs and five wickets. The diminutive right-hander has notched innings of 206 and 106 against Middlesex in the LV=CC this season but has had more success in the shorter forms. He is ranked 20th in the Clydesdale Bank 40 FTI MVP and 60th in the FP t20 FTI MVP.

Rory Hamilton-Brown turns 23 on Friday September 3rd. The Surrey captain is ranked 51st overall having scored 1399 runs and taken 8 wickets across all forms. He has led from the front in Surrey's CB40 campaign, scoring 386 runs including 115 against Glamorgan and fifties against Lancashire (twice) and the Unicorns. He is ranked 21st in the CB40 FTI MVP and 22nd in the FP t20 FTI MVP.

Alex Hales is a 21-year-old with a big future. He notched his maiden championship century against Hampshire earlier in the summer and followed that last week with a brace of 90s to sink Lancashire's title challenge. In the shorter forms he has put bat to ball in destructive fashion at the top of the order. He is ranked 50th in the CB40 FTI MVP and 33rd in the FP t20 FTI MVP.

Danny Briggs is ranked 65th overall. The 19-year-old left-arm spinner, who bemused so many batsmen in the FP t20, has snared 58 victims, 31 of which came in the game's shortest form.

Jos Buttler is another who has really caught the eye this summer. The 19-year-old has only made 1078 runs across all forms but it's the way he's got them and when that has impressed. He has played some sparkling one-day innings in big matches including 55 off 23 balls in the semi-final of the FP t20 against Nottinghamshire, which put Kieron Pollard in the shade. Last week he was at it again with a one-day career best of 87 off 46 balls to see Somerset through to the semi-final stage of the CB40.

David Malan completes the top ten of U23s. The Middlesex batsman turns 23 on the same day as Hamilton Brown. He has scored 1464 runs and taken 4 wickets across all forms.
