Collingwood Tops the ODI MVP by a Staggering 75 Points - 09.03.10
Paul Collingwood underlined his undoubted worth to England's One Day cause by storming the ODI MVP for the second time in three years, this time by a staggering 75 points. Collingwood amassed 219 ODI MVP points from 17 matches at an average of 12.88 points per game courtesy of 712 runs scored at a rate of 0.8 runs per ball, and 12 useful wickets. If you throw in his outstanding fielding in the key position of backward point, you can see why he is so respected on the international stage. The Durham allrounder made four fifties in addition to a match-winning hundred against South Africa (105 from 110 balls), his consistency demonstrated by the fact he reached double figures 14 times.
Tim Bresnan finished the ODI campaign strongly snaring eight wickets in the three matches against Bangladesh, which saw him leapfrog Stuart Broad, Jimmy Anderson and Graeme Swann into second place. The Yorkshireman took 21 wickets at an economy rate of under five runs per over and scored 208 runs, 80 of which came in a losing cause against Australia in the Champions Trophy back in October.
Eoin Morgan was another fast finisher, the highlight of his 542 campaign runs coming in the second ODI versus Bangladesh last week when he saw England home in pursuit of 261 with 110 not out from 104 balls. The Middlesex man, who represented Ireland at the last World Cup, has cemented his England place over the course of 2009-10 with a string of intelligent and improvised innings. He scored his first ODI fifty against Australia at Trent Bridge in the summer before impressing further with a couple of sixties in the Champions Trophy against Sri Lanka and South Africa, ultimately finishing third.
Jimmy Anderson finished fourth marginally ahead of Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann in fifth and sixth respectively, but while Anderson's campaign is over courtesy of a slight knee injury, the Notts pair will go head-to-head for the overall MVP title when the two remaining Tests get underway with Swann narrowly leading Broad by 13 points.
The forgotten man of England's One Day team, Owais Shah, maintained a top ten position despite not having played since the Champions Trophy semi-final against Australia. He made 98 against South Africa in that competition but his run in the England team ended with a score of two against New Zealand and a duck against Ricky Ponting's eventual Champions. He scored 439 runs at a strike rate of 0.8, including two fifties across the campaign; previously in the 2008-09 season he finished fourth in the ODI MVP with 621 runs at a strike rate of 0.9 including six fifties.
Of the 25 players to have played ODI cricket for England in 2009-10, only four; Collingwood, Broad, Alastair Cook and Craig Kieswetter have averaged more than ten points per game, the latter two having played exclusively against Bangladesh.
