Trescothick Crowned PCA MVP 2009
Marcus Trescothick has won the coveted PCA MVP title for 2009 after a sensational season which has seen him score 2934 runs across all competitions. The Somerset opening batsman finished 50 points clear of his nearest rival, former colleague Ian Blackwell, with top ten MVP finishes in three of the four county competitions. In terms of total runs scored, Trescothick scored 587 more than his nearest challenger, Jonathan Trott. Trescothick finished second in the championship (LV=CC) MVP, 14 points behind Blackwell, having scored 1817 runs including eight centuries and four scores in the nineties. He was fifth in the Friends Provident Trophy (FPT) MVP and eighth in the Natwest Pro40 MVP. In 54 innings Trescothick only failed to reach double figures on five occasions.
Blackwell has proved to be the signing of the summer with 1314 runs and 69 wickets across all cricket for Durham. Blackwell led Durham's defence of the Championship, topping the LV=CC MVP with 801 runs, including 158 versus Warwickshire and six fifties in addition to 43 wickets, 7-85 his best return at Old Trafford. The former England one-day player finished 15th in the FPT MVP and ninth in the Pro40 MVP.
Somerset wicket keeper Craig Kieswetter is third having scored 2124 runs, taken 67 catches and completed 11 stumpings across all cricket. The South African qualifies for England early in 2010 and will appear quickly on the radar of the England selectors if he can maintain his form of this season. Kieswetter scored 1242 runs and took 42 catches in the LV=CC, where he finished 15th, a position he equalled in the Pro40 MVP. He finished 11th in the T20 MVP and scored 395 runs in the FPT where he finished sixth.
Steven Davies is the second keeper in the top four of the overall MVP with 1916 runs, 50 catches and 11 stumpings across all forms. Davies, who will play for Surrey in 2010, left Worcestershire in some style scoring 97 off 75 balls in his last knock in the LV=CC against Durham before helping the Royals to a victory over the Sussex Sharks in the Pro40 with 33 from just 22 balls. Davies narrowly missed out on defending his Pro40 MVP title of last year, Phil Mustard leapfrogging him on the last day of the season. Davies had opened up a decent lead in the Pro40 MVP after scoring consecutive centuries against Notts and Hampshire.
Northants' Andrew Hall finished the season strongly to climb to fifth spot overall and fifth in the LV=CC MVP. The former South African all-rounder looked to have taken Northants back to division one of the LV=CC with a terrific performance against Leicestershire in the last round of matches to help his side win by an innings, before Essex nipped past them on the final day of the championship season with victory over Derbyshire. Hall, who scored 124 in his first LV=CC innings of the season back in April - also against Leicestershire - scored 159 from 189 balls in his last before taking 4-41 in Leicestershire's first innings to take his numbers in the LV=CC to an impressive 1161 runs and 40 wickets. Across all forms he scored 1528 runs and took 62 wickets.
Michael Yardy can reflect on a season of contrasting fortunes in his first year as captain of Sussex. The County Champions of 2003, 2006 and 2007 were relegated after losing their last two LV=CC games, but were the leading one-day side in the country walking away with the T20 and Pro40 titles having fallen at the last fence in the FPT, where they were beaten at Lord's by Hampshire. Yardy made 92 in the FPT final, a lone hand as his team fell around him, to finish 7th in the FPT MVP, while in the T20 MVP he finished sixth. He avoided making a duck throughout the LV=CC campaign but scored just two fifties in the last two months of the season, while his two LV=CC hundreds came in consecutive innings back in early June. Across all cricket he scored 1668 runs and took 27 wickets with his left-arm spin.
Samit Patel, who came second in the 2008 MVP, enjoyed another top ten finish after a strong last LV=CC match against Sussex saw him climb to seventh. The former England international scored 75 runs and took nine wickets in the match at Trent Bridge taking his LV=CC numbers to 712 runs and 32 wickets. Across all forms he scored 1138 runs and took 62 wickets. His best finish in an individual competition was eighth in the FPT MVP.
Sean Ervine was Hampshire's highest ranking player in eighth spot after scoring 1576 runs and taking 40 wickets, while Kent's James Tredwell, in ninth led the English wicket-takers with 96 scalps across all forms.
Jonathan Trott's performance in the deciding Ashes Test of the summer at the Oval is testament not only to his ability and character but also to the state of county cricket and it is fitting that despite several weeks away with the England side he should complete the top ten of the overall MVP. Trott was the leading run-scorer in the T20 with 525 runs which saw him ranked third in the T20 MVP, while across all county cricket he racked up 2197 runs including five hundreds and 13 fifties. Add on the 160 runs from the Oval Test and he is the second leading run-scorer behind Trescothick.
