Trescothick Leads MVP With One Week To Go
Marcus Trescothick enters the final week of the season with a 64-point lead at the top of the overall MVP despite suffering only his second championship (LV=CC) duck of the season. Trescothick made 72 in the first inning to take his run tally for the season to 2921 across all cricket, including nine centuries, eight of which have come in the LV=CC where he is ranked second. Incredibly he has also scored 95, 96, 98 and 99 in the LV=CC.
Ian Blackwell closed the gap on his former colleague in the overall MVP after another impressive week with both bat and ball. The powerful left-hander scored 56 in a rain-affected contest at the Rose Bowl before returning figures of 5-110, his third five wicket haul of Durham's championship-winning campaign. Blackwell leads Trescothick by six points in the LV=CC MVP having scored 792 runs and taken 41 wickets. Across all forms he has 1279 and 67.
Craig Kieswetter is a further 32 points back in third. The Somerset keeper scored 90 in the second innings against Worcestershire to take his run-tally to 2098, 1242 of which have come in the LV=CC where he is ranked 10th. Kieswetter has been remarkably consistent across all forms. He finished sixth in the FPT MVP, 11th in the T20 MVP and is ranked 14th in the Pro40 MVP.
Another member of the keeping fraternity, Steven Davies, is fourth overall, helped in recent weeks by a brace of hundreds in the Pro40 where he is ranked first. Davies, who is bound for Surrey at the end of the season, missed Worcestershire's game against Somerset and has fallen 58 points behind Kieswetter. He will no doubt be keen to play the last Pro40 of the season as he seeks to keep his nose ahead of Phil Mustard and successfully defend the Pro40 MVP title.
Michael Yardy will hope the final week of the season brings Pro40 success and top flight championship survival for his Jekyll and Hyde Sussex side. The Sharks have looked the best one-day outfit in the country for most of the summer having already clinched the T20 and finished runners-up in the FPT, but their defeat to Yorkshire this week sees them staring into the second division in the LV=CC. The Sussex captain has scored 1585 and taken 26 wickets across all forms and is approaching a thousand runs in the LV=CC. He managed 58 and 13 against Yorkshire as his team were bowled out for just 83 in the second innings.
Sean Ervine is up to sixth after a strong week where he scored a fifty against Durham in the LV=CC before contributing 31 off 34 balls and three wickets against Notts in the pro40. Ervine has scored 1532 runs and taken 38 wickets across all forms.
James Tredwell, the off-spinner whose 66 LV=CC wickets have been such a key factor in Kent clinching division two of the championship, remains in seventh spot after taking four wickets against Leicestershire this week. Tredwell has 91 wickets across all cricket and has weighed in with 590 runs.
Andrew Hall, eighth overall and seventh in the LV=CC where he has racked up 1002 runs and taken 36 wickets, will hope his Northants side can bounce back from defeat at Essex to gain promotion to division one in the LV=CC. Hall scored 85 and 29 and took three wickets at Chelmsford taking his stats across all forms to 1369 and 58.
Zander de Bruyn is up to ninth after scoring hundreds in both the LV=CC and the Pro40. Before his 109 in the Pro40 against Worcestershire last Monday, the South African had scored 15 fifties across all forms without converting to three figures. He then backed up against the same opposition scoring 106 in the LV=CC to stave off defeat.
Jonathan Trott's return to county action has allowed him to accrue enough points to re-enter the top ten. He took 3-36 and scored 79 not out against the Surrey Brown Caps at the Oval taking his tally across all county cricket to 2066 runs and 11 wickets. Add in the 160 runs he scored in the Oval Test and he is Trescothick's closest challenger in terms of runs scored.
