PCA Masters v Yorkshire 2nd XI
After many of the players and spectators had driven through driving rain to get to this picturesque ground, the PCA Masters were blessed with glorious sunshine for their recent game against the Yorkshire 2nd XI.
The Tykes won the toss and decided to bat first in this game to be held under Pro40 regulations. The PCA had an early breakthrough when Darren Cousins removed opener Gary Ballance for 0 but this was followed by a 109 run stand between Joe Root and skipper Richard Pyrah. The innings proved to be an even balance between bat and ball with key batting contributions coming from Root (41), Pyrah (65) and (57*), leaving Yorkshire in 222 for 5 in their 40 overs. The wicket takers for the PCA were Cousins (1-28), Ian Harvey (1-31), Peter Such (1-35) and skipper Stuart Law (1-42).
In response, the Masters opened up with two former Yorkshire stalwarts, Gavin Hamilton and Simon Kellett; after Kellet's early departure, Hamilton and man of the match Dominic Ostler built the innings steadily. When Ostler was fourth out for 94, the Masters were closing in on victory on 195 from 30 overs. Sensible and solid batting from Kiwi Lou Vincent (47*) and Liam Botham (13*) saw the Masters XI through to a victory within 34 overs to avenge the defeat in this fixture last year.
The PCA Masters would like to thank Sheffield Cricket Lovers' Society for hosting this match and for organising the event so well.
