Joyce Crowned MVP In Friends Provident Trophy
It will be scant consolation for beaten FPT finalist Ed Joyce but he is the first MVP winner of the year pipping Zander De Bruyn to the FPT title. Joyce scored three centuries en route to the Lord's showpiece as well as 74 in the quarters against Somerset taking his tally for the competition to 546 runs. His Sussex captain, Mike Yardy finished seventh after his unbeaten 92 on Saturday, his fifth fifty of the campaign. Yardy also took seven wickets including 4-54 in the semi-final victory over Gloucestershire.
Hampshire had veteran Dominic Cork to thank for their great start to the final, his man of the match performance also propelling him into ninth spot in the FPT MVP. Cork joined Chris Schofield as the competition's joint leading wicket taker with 20 victims. Michael Lumb was the next best Hampshire player finishing 17th.
Four of the top six FPT MVP spots were taken by Somerset players who bowed out at the quarter final stage. Peter Trego, Marcus Trescothick and Craig Kieswetter finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively with De Bruyn second.
In the overall MVP, Ian Blackwell hangs on to top spot thanks to his 4-36 against Gloucestershire in the NatwestPro40. Blackwell has scored 989 runs and taken 38 wickets across all cricket but must be feeling Trescothick's breath on the back of his neck after the Somerset man racked up his fourth championship (LV=CC) hundred of the season. Trescothick is the country's leading run-scorer across all forms with 1723 runs.
Another batsman in fine form is Michael Carberry who followed consecutive championship hundreds with a double this week against Warwickshire at the Rose Bowl. Carberry has scored 1587 runs across all cricket, 546 of them coming in less than a fortnight, which has seen him jump from eighth to third.
The other major mover this week is Warwickshire's Jonathan Trott who made 184 in the first innings at the Rose Bowl, his third score of more than 160 this season. Trott, who will hope to improve his third position in the T20 MVP during the T20 quarters this week, has scored 1453 runs across all forms, which takes him to tenth spot in the overall MVP.
