Chapple Climbs Top Of MVP Table
It's an old-school battle at the top of the MVP this week with Glen Chapple nudging aside Marcus Trescothick by a solitary point after leading Lancashire to victory over Worcestershire at Old Trafford. Chapple scored 15 points for his first innings effort of 44 because it represented over 30% of the Lancashire total, he then added a further eight points for his 2-36 but it was the point earned for the win as captain that takes him top. He has now scored 396 runs and taken 50 wickets across all forms, 337 and 27 of which have come in the LV=CC where he is ranked second.
Trescothick, the country's leading run-scorer across all cricket with 1547 runs, had a quiet week contributing just 22 in his only innings against Hampshire at Taunton. He is ranked fifth in the LV=CC MVP having scored 837 runs including three hundreds and three scores in the 90s. He has also earned a point for each of his 22 catches.
Ian Blackwell is another seasoned campaigner having a fine season. The powerful left-handed striker scored just 44 runs at Headingley against Yorkshire but earned good points for a match return of 5-89 to ensure Durham's fine start to their title defence continues. Blackwell is ranked second in the LV=CC with 560 runs and 14 wickets. Across all cricket he has 891 runs and 30 wickets.
Craig Kieswetter notched 43 against Hampshire taking his LV=CC tally to 562 runs including two early-season hundreds. He has scored 1202 runs, taken 32 catches and 6 stumpings and continues to be consistent across all forms: he is ranked sixth in the FPT MVP, 12th in the T20 MVP and 24th in the LV=CC.
Jamie Dalrymple is another county captain leading from the front. He has been Glamorgan's stand-out performer all season having scored 1157 runs and taken 21 wickets across all forms. In the LV=CC he had already scored three hundreds and three scores in the 70s before adding another fifty this week in his only innings against Essex at Chelmsford.
Peter Trego is a non-mover in sixth spot after another consistent performance with the bat. Last week his astonishing innings of 103 from 54 balls lit up Taunton as Somerset chased 476 to beat Yorkshire. This week a more circumspect Trego made 50 from 52 balls against Hampshire taking his tally across all forms to 716 runs and 34 wickets.
Trego's county colleague Zander de Bruyn has been slowly slipping down the top ten after briefly leading the table at the end of the group stages of the FPT. De Bruyn, who had a phenomenal FPT campaign with four scores in the 70s and 96 versus Sussex in the quarters, is ranked top of the FPT MVP and eighth in the T20 MVP. Across all cricket he has scored 1006 runs and taken 18 wickets.
Sussex skipper, Mike Yardy, who will lead his team out in the FPT final at Lord's and in the quarters of the T20 later this month, is in eighth spot overall. The former England one-day international made 57 in his only knock against Warwickshire at Edgbaston this week taking his overall tally to 910 runs in addition to his 22 wickets.
Worcestershire's Steven Davies and Sean Ervine make up the top ten.
Pro40 Returns For The Last Time
The final competition of the season, the Natwest Pro40, which is to be replaced by the P20 next year, starts this week with Worcestershire keeper Steven Davies looking to defend the Pro40 MVP he won in some style last year. Davies pipped Trescothick to the title in 2008, scoring 491 runs at a strike rate of 1.23 including two hundreds and three fifties. Trescothick also scored two hundreds in racking up 556 runs but it was Davies' four catches and two stumpings that made the difference.
