Trescothick Storms To Top Of MVP Table

With cricket's oldest international duel almost upon us, it's an England Ashes hero of 2005 vintage, who leaps to the top of the county MVP. Sadly Marcus Trescothick has long ruled himself out of an England comeback but his country's loss has been Somerset's gain as the prolific opener's hunger for runs shows no signs of abating. Trescothick is the leading run-scorer across all forms in the country with 1525 runs including four hundreds. This week against Yorkshire he recorded his third championship hundred and his third score in the 90s of this campaign. His 146 in the first innings earned him more MVP points but his 96 in the second at a good tempo laid the platform for an astonishing assault on a target of 476. Trescothick has scored 815 runs in the LV=CC, where he is ranked fourth.

Trescothick's county colleague Craig Kieswetter is just six points behind in second spot despite having a quiet game by his 2009 standards. The wicket keeper contributed just 45 runs against Yorkshire but across all forms he has racked up 1159 runs including four hundreds, 31 catches and six stumpings.

Glen Chapple is in third spot after collecting another healthy bag of MVP points this week. He scored 55 and took four wickets against Notts in the LV=CC and then took a further three wickets in the FPT semi versus Hampshire. The Lancashire captain has 352 runs and 48 wickets across all forms.

Another county captain, Jamie Dalrymple, occupies fourth spot although Glamorgan's lack of cricket this week has seen him drop a couple of places. Dalrymple, who is ranked fourth in the T20 MVP and 18th in the LV=CC, has scored 1107 runs and taken 20 wickets across all forms. In the championship he has scored more than 21% of his team's runs. In T20 he has scored more than 23%.

Zander de Bruyn, yet another Somerset man (there are five in this week's overall top ten), occupies fifth spot. The all-rounder, who is leading the FPT MVP, scored 58 runs and took two wickets against Yorkshire at Taunton this week. Across all forms he has 987 runs and 18 wickets. De Bruyn has scored eight fifties (six of which have been 70+) but has yet to record his first hundred of the 2009 season.

De Bruyn's county colleague and fellow all-rounder, Peter Trego, has just notched his own first century of the season, and what a knock it was. He smashed 103 from 54 balls to take his team to 476, the second largest successful run chase in the history of the county championship. Trego has now scored 666 runs and taken 33 wickets across all forms.

Ian Blackwell had a quiet week with the bat contributing 1 and 3 in a low-scoring encounter at the Riverside, but he did pick up a couple of crucial wickets as the county champions eventually prevailed against Worcester. Blackwell is ranked third in the LV=CC MVP having scored 516 runs and taken nine wickets, and seventh in the overall MVP where his numbers across all forms read 847 and 25.

Mike Yardy, the Sussex captain had a week off Championship action but he did capture four important Gloucestershire wickets in the FPT as Sussex reached their second Lord's final in three years. Yardy has scored 849 runs and taken 22 wickets across all forms and has earned many useful MVP points as a winning captain, which have helped him to eighth spot.

Steven Davies (Worcestershire) and Alfonso Thomas (Somerset) make up the top ten but special mention must go to Ed Joyce who catapulted himself to second in the FPT MVP with 146 from 139 balls in the semi against the Gladiators. Joyce has scored 531 runs in the competition, including three hundreds.
