Broad and Bopara Head England MVP - 23/06/2009
Stuart Broad and Ravi Bopara, two young guns with huge international futures, head the England MVP having sustained their Test form through the ICC World Twenty20. Broad showed his maturity by bouncing back from the disappointment of defeat to the Dutch to take 3-17 against eventual winners Pakistan in the very next match. He conceded less than six per over in three consecutive games and also weighed in with the bat striking 10 off just 2 balls against the West Indies. Broad has now scored 94 runs and taken 20 wickets across all forms since the beginning of the international summer.
Bopara scored a century in each of the Test matches, a brace of forties in the ODIs and got England off to brisk starts in three of the T20 matches. He has already scored 488 runs in this campaign, which sees him just three points behind Broad.
Jimmy Anderson is in third spot. England's spearhead, who leads the Test MVP, returned excellent figures of 3-23 against the Dutch in the T20 but thereafter was a trifle expensive. Anderson picked up five wickets in the tournament conceding runs at an average of 7.56 per over. Expect him to play a key role in the Ashes.
Graeme Swann continues to enjoy life in the spotlight and in the MVP where he currently sits fourth. The Nottinghamshire off-spinner took wickets in each of his four T20 matches and averaged less than 7 runs per over. He has scored 78 runs and taken 14 wickets across all forms.
Paul Collingwood would have been disappointed with his return in the ICC World Twenty20 particularly as he showed good form in the one-dayers against the West Indies. England's T20 captain reached double figures in four of his five T20 matches without getting past a best of 19 and he only bowled himself in England's first match against the Dutch. Collingwood, fifth in the overall MVP, is ranked first in the ODI MVP having scored 70 runs at better than a run-a-ball and taken 3 wickets in the two games against the West Indies.
Kevin Pietersen is widely regarded as England's best player and he showed how important he is to the team's cause in the four matches he played at the World T20. Pietersen scored 154 runs at a strike rate of 1.52 despite his achilles problem, completely bossing the show while he was at the crease. He scored over a quarter of England's total runs in the matches he played and has now scored 203 runs across all forms. Pietersen, who missed the ODIs to rest his Achilles injury, is ranked sixth overall and first in the T20 MVP.
Owais Shah is another top player, who never quite fired during the tournament. The Middlesex man got starts in four innings but couldn't convert them into match-winning scores. Shah is ranked seventh overall, third in the ODI MVP
Graham Onions (eighth) will face tougher tests in the game's longest form than the West Indies but 10 wickets from two Tests is still a tremendous return. Onions has enjoyed a remarkable season taking 40 wickets from just 5 Championship (LV=CC) games, which has propelled him to the top of the LV=CC MVP, too. His place in the provisional 16-man Ashes squad is well deserved.
Matt Prior and Alastair Cook make up the top ten.
