Schofield Legs It Top Of FPT MVP Table
The Friends Provident Trophy (FPT) has reached the quarter final stage as 12 teams bow out of the competition. Surrey are one such team, which means Chris Schofield will not stay top of the FPT MVP for long. The former Lancashire and England ‘leggie' has taken 20 wickets in the competition including 5-32 against Sussex at the Oval this week. He has also chipped in with 84 runs from the lower-middle order.
Somerset have been the outstanding team of the group stages, which is reflected in the fact they have three players in the top four of the FPT MVP. Leading competition run-scorer Marcus Trescothick is in second with a mammoth 476 runs, which is nearly a quarter of Somerset's competition runs. He scored 144 against Scotland and four other fifties three of which came at a rate of better than a run-a-ball.
Peter Trego is in third with 17 wickets and 156 runs. He smashed 73 off 36 balls in the Sabres' opening match against Kent, 74 off 39 in his next innings against Scotland and has taken four wickets in an innings on three occasions, his best return: 10-2-17-4 against Middlesex at Bath.
Zander de Bruyn's unique sequence of scores was ended when he contributed just 6 runs in his last knock versus Scotland. Previously he had scored: 73,71, 72 and 70. The Saltires were on the receiving end of his bowling, however, as he took 3-24 from 10. He is in fourth spot in the FPT MVP with 292 runs and 9 wickets.
Yorkshire Carnegie's Richard Pyrah has always been a useful one-day cricketer and his 17 wickets and 153 runs have seen him jump to fifth spot in the FPT MVP. He will progress no further, however, as Yorkshire failed to qualify for the knockout stages.
The same fate has befallen Worcestershire as they were dealt the shock of the summer so far losing to Ireland. A win would have seen them top of Group A but they were bowled out in stunning fashion for just 58, which means one-time leader of the FPT MVP, Steven Davies, will not rise above his current position of sixth. Davies has been in terrific form for the Royals contributing 7 double-figure scores including three fifties in their campaign. He scored 315 runs in the FPT, while across all cricket his contribution has been 541 runs 13 catches and 8 stumpings, which sees him top of the overall MVP.
Varun Chopra has been in sparkling FPT form at the top of the Essex order. The defending champions are through to the quarter final, where Chopra will be looking to add to his 460 runs. Chopra has batted seven times in the FPT scoring five fifties (including 99 against Derbyshire), 42 and 37. He has scored over 31% of Essex's competition runs.
Samit Patel is a player with a lot to prove having been left out of the England set-up once again. The Notts all-rounder was experiencing a mixed FPT until he took 6-13 against Ireland earning him 34 MVP points, propelling him to eighth in the FPT MVP. With Notts scraping through to the last courtesy of Ireland's victory at New Road, Patel has another chance to demonstrates his undoubted talent.
Ian Blackwell and Mark Ramprakash make up the top ten although neither will be playing in the quarters. Blackwell made 204 competition runs and took 12 wickets while Ramps, who batted just six times, pumped out three hundreds against Durham, Gloucestershire and Sussex. His 373 runs represented over 27% of Surrey runs in this year's FPT.
