England Look To Bounce Back In Antigua - 10/02/2009

England will be looking to bounce back immediately after their capitulation in Kingston, where they were bowled out for 51 to lose by an innings to an unfancied West Indies team. Only Kevin Pietersen, Andrew Flintoff and Stuart Broad emerged with much credit, three men who have performed consistently in the MVP rankings throughout the campaign.

Pietersen and Flintoff, both valued at $1.55 million in the IPL auction in Goa which took place during the Test in Jamaica, demonstrated just how important they are to their country's future in the longest form of the game.

Pietersen top-scored with 97 in the first innings more than 30 per cent of England's total of 318. He is ranked number one in the overall MVP having scored 1389 runs across all cricket including six hundreds and three 90s. He's second in the Test MVP behind Jimmy Anderson who did not make the starting XI. In Tests Pietersen has scored four hundreds and two 90s.

Broad, who opted out of the IPL auction to concentrate on his England career, is second in the overall MVP having returned career best figures of 5-85 in Jamaica, a performance which earned him 25 MVP points. He has scored 361 runs and taken 48 wickets across all forms this term, 285 and 22 of which have come in the Test arena where he is ranked fifth.

Flintoff is ranked fourth in the overall MVP and is now just eight points behind Anderson. He took 2-72 from 33 overs in West Indies' only innings and scored 43 and 24 with the bat. His second innings effort - England's only score in double figures - represented more than 40 per cent of the total earning him extra points.

Monty Panesar got through 47 overs for the sole wicket of Denesh Ramdin in Kingston but he hangs on to fourth spot in the Test MVP. The left-arm spinner has taken 29 Test scalps but he has taken five wickets in an innings just once since the MVP race began at the beginning of our international summer in May.

One very big plus for England amongst the Jamaican wreckage was the appearance of Ryan Sidebottom. The Nottinghamshire left-arm swing bowler returned after a six-month lay off and bowled an economical 24 overs for just 35 runs. He swung the new ball and will benefit hugely from the competitive work out. Sidebottom, England's player of the year after his dramatic successes in his first full season, has managed to hang on to a top six position in this year's Test MVP thanks to a strong showing against New Zealand at the beginning of our summer. He currently has 24 Test wickets and averages 21.25 points per Test more than even Flintoff.
