Strauss Climbs England MVP Table - 17/12/2008

Andrew Strauss is the big mover in the England MVP after becoming only the tenth England player to have recorded centuries in each innings of a Test match. Strauss scored a staggering 50 points for his innings of 123 and 108 in Chennai propelling him up the MVP table. He has jumped to seventh in the overall MVP and climbed five places to second spot in the Test MVP after scoring 34% of his total MVP runs in one match. He scored over a third of England's runs in the Test match and has now contributed more Test runs than any other player (677) since the beginning of our international summer.

Kevin Pietersen has rightly earned huge plaudits for getting his team out to India to resume the tour after the terrible atrocities in Mumbai. He had a quiet match by his own high standards but remains atop the overall MVP table by three points from Stuart Broad. Pietersen has contributed 612 Test runs, which sees him ranked third in the Test MVP. Across all cricket England's captain leads the way with 1147 runs.

Jimmy Anderson is the highest ranked player in the Test MVP. He had a storming summer against New Zealand and consolidated his position in the series with South Africa. Despite Strauss' phenomenal efforts in Chennai the paceman has a 47-point lead at the top having taken 36 Test match wickets. Across all forms he has taken 44 wickets, which sees him in third place in the overall MVP behind Pietersen and Broad.

Monty Panesar has copped a lot of criticism after the Chennai Test probably from the same sections of the media that were lambasting Paul Collingwood and Strauss last week. Panesar is England's fourth ranked player in the Test MVP having taken 25 wickets in this year's campaign including 3-65 in the first innings. He is ranked tenth overall.

Andrew Flintoff was the pick of England's bowlers in the first Test adding four more wickets to his tally, whilst offering his captain control by going for less than three runs per over in each innings. The big man maintains his fourth position in the overall MVP having scored 436 runs and taken 30 wickets across all forms since his comeback against South Africa in the summer. He is eighth in the Test MVP having played half the matches of the leading players.

Paul Collingwood always seems to pull a score out the bag when he needs it most. The Durham man was coming under increasing pressure from Owais Shah but answered his critics with a fine hundred in the second innings at Chennai. Collingwood has scored 628 runs across all forms, including Test hundreds here and at Edgbaston against South Africa, which sees him ranked sixth overall. The former one-day captain is ranked ninth in the Test MVP and sixth in the ODI MVP.
