Stuart Broad Leads England MVP Race - 17/11/2008
Stuart Broad jumps to the top of the overall England MVP, whilst simultaneously opening up a 32-point lead at the top of the England ODI MVP, following a terrific all-round performance in the second one-day international from Indore. The young tyro reduced India to 29-3 before returning to remove centurion Yuvraj Singh to record figures of 4-55 from his ten overs. He then showed why some consider him a genuine all-rounder with a quick-fire 22 from 11 balls as England threatened an unlikely fightback.
Broad has taken 21 ODI wickets and scored 76 valuable runs since the MVP campaign began at the start of our international summer in May. Across all forms he has taken 38 wickets and has scored 356 runs including three Test fifties in consecutive matches. He is ranked fourth in the Test MVP but leads Kevin Pietersen by eight points in the race for the overall MVP.
Pietersen continues to score runs despite a couple of heavy reverses for his team. His 63 from 56 balls in the first ODI from Rajkot saw him briefly jump to the top of the overall MVP table but his 33 from 69 balls in Indore was not enough to keep pace with Broad. Pietersen's MVP cause will be helped if England return to winning ways as the MVP's unique formula credits captains for wins. Pietersen is England's leading run-scorer in this year's MVP across all cricket having contributed 1013 runs as well as four wickets. He lies third in the ODI MVP.
James Anderson remains in third overall despite another wicket-less performance in Indore. The Lancashire swing bowler, who is ranked first in the Test MVP, proved a useful foil for Broad, however, bowling his overs economically. He occupies 11th position in the ODI MVP having taken six wickets. He has 42 from all cricket.
Andrew Flintoff is a non-mover in fourth after a strong all-round performance in Indore. Our Fred was his customary reliable self with the ball going for 49 runs from 9 overs, while his batting looks to be approaching its exhilarating best. A hundred in the warm-up games got him in good touch and he enjoyed the Power-play overs late in the England innings smashing the ball over the in-field to rekindle England hopes in alliance with Pietersen. Flintoff lies in second spot in the ODI MVP.
Ian Bell had a disappointing day, run out for one, in England's run chase but he stays in fifth overall, while Owais Shah closed the gap on the leaders in the ODI MVP with another accomplished fifty. Shah's 58 from 78 balls was England's highest of the day and takes him to 335 ODI runs for the MVP year at a strike rate of 0.89 runs per ball. Shah, in fourth, closes to within 24 points of Pietersen.
England were outplayed in every department by an in-form Indian side in the first one-day international from Rajkot but it's not all bad news for Pietersen as his innings of 63 from 56 balls propels him to the top of the overall England MVP.
Pietersen's renowned for his flamboyance but he's also a model of consistency continuing from where he left off at the end of the England's international summer. Having scored 94 and 100 in his last two Tests against South Africa he notched a 90 and a 40 against them in the ODIs as well as taking important wickets. Pietersen has now scored 980 runs for England across all forms of cricket since mid May including three Test hundreds and his one-day international hundred at the Riverside against New Zealand where he unveiled the switch-hit. He is ranked third in the ODI MVP.
Stuart Broad remains in second place in the overall MVP after the first one-dayer. Having battled back from injury to claim his spot in the side the Nottinghamshire bowling all-rounder found conditions tough with ball in hand conceding 74 runs from his ten overs, but he did contribute 26 runs at better than a run-a-ball in the run chase. Broad has score 334 runs and taken 34 wickets across all cricket. He leads the ODI MVP by 18 points having scored 54 runs and taken 17 wickets.
Jimmy Anderson drops from first to third in the overall MVP in the space of one game. His eight overs for 52 runs was not a disaster but an indication that the bowlers might find India a hard place to rack up big MVP points. Anderson heads the Test MVP having taken 34 Test wickets against New Zealand and South Africa but found the going tougher in the shorter forms. He lies 11th in the ODI MVP.
Andrew Flintoff surged up the rankings at the end of the summer. The big all-rounder showed what England had been missing with a series of stellar performances with bat and ball. He averages more points per game than any other England player: 15.64 overall and 12.99 in one-day internationals. Despite having played just five completed one-dayers, Flintoff is up to second in the ODI MVP behind Broad. He has scored 191 runs including two scores of 78 and has taken 14 wickets. Across all cricket he has scored 304 runs and taken 23 wickets, which sees him in fourth place in the overall MVP
Ian Bell occupies fifth spot overall and fourth in the ODI MVP. In 10 completed ODIs Bell has failed to make double figures just once yet has recorded just the solitary fifty. On India's flat batting pitches England's one-day opener will hope to improve that ratio. He has 319 runs in one-day internationals and 756 across all forms.
