All Round Brilliance Sees van Jaarsveld Lead MVP
The standout performance of the week propelling him back to the top of the overall MVP came from Martin van Jaarsveld, who notched a brace of unbeaten hundreds either side of his maiden five wicket haul in first class cricket. It was the South African's first bowl in the Championship (LVCC) this summer and he made up for lost time taking 5-33 including Mark Ramprakash first ball. Van Jaarsveld's points tally of 82 is the highest match return of the season to date. He scored 43% of Kent's runs in the match and now has 30% of their total championship runs for the season. He has 1289 runs including six centuries across all cricket and is ranked first in the Friends Provident MVP and second in the LVCC MVP.
Tim Bresnan is on the same number of points as van Jaarsveld at the top of the overall MVP. The Yorkshireman took 5-94 against Durham this week but it was not enough to stave off defeat. He is ranked first in the LVCC MVP where he has 305 runs and 29 wickets; he has 452 runs and 53 wickets overall.
Samit Patel consolidated his position in the top three with another useful contribution as Nottinghamshire's ran out comfortable winners over Hampshire at the Rose Bowl. The batting all-rounder scored 65 and took 2-57 taking his tally across all cricket to 742 runs and 30 wickets.
Yasir Arafat had a quiet game at the Oval in the LVCC but his one-day performances have meant he has always been in contention in the overall MVP, where he currently lies fourth. He is fourth in the Friends Provident Trophy (FPT) MVP and tenth in the Twenty20 (T20) MVP. He has 363 runs and 54 wickets.
Ryan ten Doeschate was the closest to van Jaarsveld in terms of points scored this week. The Dutchman who is a new entry into the top ten at number five racked up 47 points for scores of 118 and 55 and second innings figures of 4-29 in Essex's win over Derbyshire. He has 803 runs and 41 wickets overall.
Ryan Mclaren continues to take useful wickets. The South African played his part in Kent's win over Surrey taking five wickets in the match and contributing useful lower order runs. He has 186 runs and 28 wickets in the LVCC where he is ranked fourth. Overall his ranking is sixth with 287 runs and 52 wickets across the three competitions.
Ravi Bopara's return to the Essex fold saw him racking up the MVP points again. The supremely talented batting all-rounder scored 71 and took 4-33 in the win over Derbyshire bringing his overall total to 1166 runs and 23 wickets, which sees him in seventh place overall.
Eighth is Jim Allenby, whose ranking owes much to his limited overs performances. He is currently tenth in the FPT MVP and sixth in the T20 MVP and has 595 runs and 39 wickets overall.
Anthony McGrath is another player who is hitting the white ball better than the red. The popular Yorkshireman, who lies ninth overall, has just one fifty to his name in the LVCC but is ranked 20th in the FPT MVP and fourth in the T20 MVP where he is the leading runs scorer with 392 runs including four fifties.
Azhar Mahmood completes the top ten. The Pakistan all rounder was rested for Kent's clash with Surrey as the Spitfires have one eye on Friday's FPT semi at the Riverside. Mahmood had an excellent T20 campaign scoring 239 runs at a strike rate of 1.72 and taking 13 wickets.
