Martin van Jaarsveld Is New Leader Of MVP Table
Martin van Jaarsveld is the new leader atop the county MVP this week. Van Jaarsveld, who continued his fine form in the Friends Provident Trophy with an unbeaten century against Sussex a day after captaining Kent to victory over Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in the championship, is one of four men of Kent - via Pakistan and South Africa - in this week's top ten. He has 367 runs in the FPT with two hundreds and two fifties and has scored fifty or better in seven of his ten innings in all cricket this term.
Van Jaarsveld's county colleague Yasir Arafat has climbed to second place overall with consistent performances across both competitions. Arafat is ranked sixth in each with a combined total of 23 wickets and 194 valuable runs. This week the bowling all-rounder contributed scores of 67 and 36 from number nine in the championship match before taking 2-31 from his ten overs against Sussex in the FPT.
Ravi Bopara hangs in at number three despite a second consecutive week of playing against New Zealand - this time for the England lions - which has meant he has had no points to play for.
Nicky Boje slips to fourth as Northants were without a championship match but he did rack up a few bowling points and one for captaincy in the win against Warwickshire in the FPT.
Jonathan Trott is a new entry at number five after scoring two centuries this week. He notched 104 against Derbyshire in the championship before scoring more than half Warwickshire's runs with 120 against Northants. He has 558 runs and four wickets across both competitions so far and is ranked third in the LVCC MVP.
Hylton Ackerman occupies sixth despite a quiet week. He 257 one-day runs, which sees him in seventh in the FPT and 554 overall.
Ryan McLaren, the third Kent player in the top ten, is a new entry at number seven after a great week with bat and ball. The all-rounder followed his 5-46 in the FPT on bank holiday Monday against Surrey with 6-75 and scores of 57 and 37 against Notts. He now has 182 runs and 19 wickets.
The bad news for all Lancashire and England fans is that Freddie Flintoff has picked up a side strain ruling him out of the first two Tests of the summer. The good news is that he's a new entry into the top ten at number eight after some sterling performances for Lancs with the ball. He appears in the top ten by virtue of returning figures of 3-21 and 4-21 at a miserly economy rate as the red rose routed Durham. He has now taken 14 wickets.
Neil Carter is at number nine. The powerful left-armer bowler and pinch hitter took nine wickets this week, six in the championship against Derbyshire. He has 191 runs and 19 wickets overall.
Azhar Mahmood slips to tenth after missing the game against Notts through injury but he was back to frustrate Sussex with miserly figures of 0-35. He has 263 runs and nine wickets.
Some big movers in their preferred competitions were James Tomlinson who leapt to fourth in the championship MVP with 8-46 against Somerset at Taunton; Stephen Peters whose 97 against Warwickshire for Northants brings his tally to 298 runs for the competition and sees him slide into second in the MVP FPT behind van Jaarsveld; and Mark Pettini who has yet to fire in the championship where he's ranked 162nd, but is up to third in the FPT having scored two hundreds in three matches.
