Twenty20 Minor Counties League Cup Trophy
On a cloudy but bright day in Shifnal, Shropshire, a large crowd gathered to watch the semi-finals and finals of the Twenty20 Minor Counties Cup Trophy involving PCA Masters, Staffordshire, Shropshire and Herefordshire.
PCA Masters started slowly in their semi-final against Staffordshire but Chris Schofield and Phil Simmons soon produced a partnership of 128 with Simmons finishing on 89 not out. Staffordshire had a target of 165 to beat but were unable to do so after some fine bowling by the PCA Masters with Devon Malcolm, Paul Jarvis and Phil Simmons taking 2 wickets each.
Shropshire won through convincingly in their semi-final against Herefordshire and so the partisan local crowd prepared to pit their wits against the Masters!
Chris Schofield, a key man against Staffs, had to pull out of the final with a torn hamstring and he was sorely missed as Shropshire raised their game to bowl out the Masters for just 81 inside 18 overs, with only Ratcliffe and Lloyd reaching double figures.
Despite reducing Shropshire to 30-3 with some controlled aggression from Malcolm and Jarvis, Neil Smith's sharply turning spinners just didn’t have enough runs to defend.
Shropshire, much to the home crowds delight went past the Masters after 15 overs with 5 wickets down.
All credit must go to the organisers at Shifnal CC for a superbly well organised, successful and enjoyable day.
