PCA Masters v Frinton CC

The annual curtain raiser to the Frinton CC cricket week lived up to the usual expectation with a very competitive fixture against a strong PCA Masters team. The fourth year of this fixture was blessed with good weather, good lunch and a fantastic turn out from local spectators and sponsors alike.

The toss was won by Frinton who elected to field on a slow and slightly uneven surface, which the ground staff did exceptionally well to prepare after heavy overnight rain.

The PCA Masters set off to a brisk start with Martin McCague deciding that attack was the best option, in doing so helping himself to a quick fire 46 before being unluckily run out after slipping whilst turning for the second run.

Meanwhile McCague's partner Carl Crowe continued to play steadily whilst watching the demise of Martin Bicknell, Paul Prichard and Steve Marsh within the space of 40 runs taking the score onto 125 - 4.

Crowe then found good support from Gladstone Small who was dismissed for 31, after a 50 partnership. Crowe was eventually dismissed for a very well made 66, leaving Darren Cousins not out 14 and the PCA Masters total 210 - 8 after the 40 overs.

The pick of the Frinton bowlers being N Patel with figures of 4-24 off of his allotted eight overs.

The Frinton Innings got off to a sluggish start mainly due to a hostile opening spell from Chris Lewis one end and an accurate spell from Darren Cousins toiling up hill into the wind the other end. With two wickets falling inside the first eight overs, Frinton were starting to fall behind the required rate.

A partnership between J Goodall and T Moulton started to put Frinton up with the rate but a tidy spell of bowling in the middle overs from Dean Headley, Alan Igglesden and Gladstone Small kept the home team behind the rate.

The introduction of spin from Peter Such and Carl Crowe was the deciding factor both picking up two wickets apiece with Peter Such dismissing J Goodall for a well made 63, all but ending Frinton's hopes. Only a late flurry from R Everson gave the Frinton score some respectability ending at 197-7 giving the PCA Masters victory by 13 runs.
